size tags? labels? **added pics post 1**

I was wondering if you diaper- sewing mamas do anything to easily tell the different sizes apart? Do you label the dipes as 'yours' in any way?

Now that I'm starting to sew more of a complete stash (nb - toddler) and am planning on sewing a mini-stash as a gift for a new baby,I'd like to be able to see what's what at a glance. For myself, I'm sure I could tell (though maybe not in a few years...) but for my cousin (mama of the new baby) I'd like to do something to label the sizes and possibly denote the diapers as made by me.

I thought of using emroidery floss and sewing a small 'x' or heart or something (like, pencel-earser size?) on the inside of the wing, in different colors for different sizes. I could just include a little card letting her know what's what. My grandma embroiders her initials and the year onto the corner of everything she sews, maybe I could do intitals and a size? I also thought of doing a loop tag-type thing on the outside back with different colors of ribbon for the different sizes. I just don't know if there are better, time-tested ideas out there - and I'm sure there are! I just want it to look neat and not wear off.

I'm sewing T&T covers and T&T fitteds, if that matters!

Thanks mamas!

** just wanted to add pics to show you all what I ended up doing and how they look on a diaper! Thanks again for all the help, I'm really happy with how these turned out. **

i use these size labels:

http://www.diapershop.com/index.php/...8/prevstart/0/

and as far as marking it as my own, i don't do anything yet but i thought about maybe embroidering a cute little design on the wing of the diapers or something. haven't tried yet though.

I'm curious too. I've been writing a small "nb" or "s" next to the velcro with a fine-point sharpie. But, I'm not giving them as gifts. I think your embroidery idea sounds really cute.

The One Stop Diaper Shop web site has little sew on tags if you want a more professional look.

You can always use a special color of thread to topstitch with, a certain color for each size. If you are using Aplix you can use the special color thread to sew the loop tape on.

Serena - http://www.picturetrail.com/xiaohua68847 - seems to have some awesome prices and a variety of different size tags. She's in China but has great feedback and quick shipping from what I hear. I was wondering about marking sizes too but then I'm really only making one size to fit my toddler. If I were doing NB to toddler I'd probably use tags or colour code the diapers somehow.

I love your idea of sewing a heart or something on ribbon. That would be adorable!

I bought cheap size labels off ebay. It was about $5 for 1,000 labels. I got them in each size, and I like them just fine. Nothing fancy. I usually sew them undreneath the hook tape on the wings.

In the newest Ottobre diaper pattern (Fall '05), they suggested putting a ribbon loop under the Aplix at the center front as a way to get your wing tabs attached quicker and more evenly. You could make each size a different color. Then attach a ribbon loop of the same color to the corresponding cover sizes.
I'd probably match them to the Prorap colors since that cover is widely available and could be checked later.

and I *just* recieved an order from her!! (wonder what the shipping would be for a letter envelope full of little tags? )

Well, isn't this just genious?? Awesome idea! I could totally sew around the aplix as it's concealed inside a fabric tab so the stitching wouldn't even be seen from the outside. I mean, I know you couldn't see the size at a glance when the dipe is folded up but it's not like you're constantly sorting through the sizes at every change, just when you're deciding what to put in 'the rotation'. Oh, this would look so good in a nice smooth satin stitch, too (super tight, wide zig-zag) - only straight and zig-zag stitched on my machine.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about this before, either, as I just made one size to fit my son (and those dipes/covers have lasted about a year ). I love some of those tags in your link!

Okay, this is just an awesome idea! Now, I just need to understand jsut where under the Aplix this goes - toward the wing tip or diaper body? And, just out of curiosity, how does this help with Aplix application?

After reading all these great ideas, I think what I will do is buy some white grosgrain ribbon (1/2" wide?) and then 4 colors of thread (nb,s,m,lg). I'll run a satin stitch straight down a length of ribbon in each thread color (do a long length at once), cut off what I need for each dipe as I need it, then loop it to make a tag.

I think the white ribbon and the tag design (with the colored stripe down the middle) will be 'my signature' and the color will denote the size. Ooh! I could also make a super cute size card by sewing each of the 4 tags in a seam of fabric, opening it up and fixing it to a card, which I could label below, maybe even include washing instructions or something. Just what I need, another project...

Not sure yet if I will place it inside the wing under the aplix, in the seam of the outer wing (hanging down over the tummy), or in the back seam, closer to one side to avoid the back elastic / pocket hole. Guess this depends on how nice the tags turn out!

I can't thank you all enough for your great ideas! (Feel free to analyse my plan for obvious flaws! )

I love the ribbon with the colored stripe idea! And to think, before this post I hadn't even thought about using size tags.

I haven't seen the pattern, but I think the ribbon goes under the loop tape on the front of the diaper in the center. That way, when you're putting the diaper on your babe it's easier to get the wings centered on the front.

OH! Under the LOOP!!! I was thinking under the hook on the wing. This makes total sense and the idea of using it to center the wings is genious. Thanks!

Yes, that is it!

If you go to www.ottobredesigns.com you can look at past issues. It is the 3/05 one. You'll have to find the page spread where the diapers are (it is towards the middle or back, I think) and you may be able to see a tiny piece of ribbon there in the center of the loop tape (bottom edge) on the front of the diaper.

That should be www.ottobredesign.com without the "s" on design.

Last night I was researching snap-presses (StrawHatBrat's dipes are making me jealous) and thesnapstore.com has resin snaps with sizes on them (nb, s, etc.)

So, if you go snaps there is one more option.

Thanks for correcting. I did not check it before typing it (lazy?). I was just sure that you don't want to go visiting "www.ottobre.com" .

so, now that you might have your size designation figured out (and, my goodness, I have to say there have been FABULOUS ideas here!! I them!!!).... if you really want to put some personalized labels on the dipes, I *JUST* (as in about 30 seconds ago), came across this link on craftster.org and I totally love it!!! I'm so going to have to try it -- as soon as I can find the iron-on printer paper (sometimes it's rough in a five-stoplight town). ... oh.. and I need new ink cartridges too... only having black and yellow is a bit tough at times!

I totally remember reading that link awhile ago! And you know, I did think about it for my tags, especially since I have a pack of that iron-on transfer paper right now. The thing that's holding me back is that I made my son some pajamas for Xmas and used the transfer-paper on the shirt and with maybe 5 washings the lettering is already starting to fade. Point is, I'm just not sure how they would hold up to the hard-core diaper washing we do. If someone can convince me otherwise, though, I'd be so thrilled!

ps> I started making my taggies and will post pics as soon as I'm finished. I'm so excited to see how adorable they look on a diaper!
