sewing pity party, come on in!

WAH! I had a bad sewing night last night and I'm still ! I bought some really cool MM fleece that has this waterproof, thin, rubbery backing on it, clearly perfect for trying out a tiny little newborn pattern. Well, the rubbery backing (that was now on the outsides of both peices) was so sticky that it was dragging and stretching and bunching and puckering and piling up the stiches and Oh, I was getting so frustrated! It made my bobbin thread tangle up into these huge ratty messes, which then broken my needle, then the stitches were so close to the edge that I couldn't get my elastic on the seam allowance, then the two pieces were completely different sizes and the whole cover basically looked like a demolished piece of fabric, wrapped in ripped saran wrap, maybe that had been attacked by a wild animal. A wild animal that clearly did *not* know how to use a sewing machine. And you know, if I had endless time to sew, fine, this would be just freaking : but I don't, so it's not. I stayed up until 12:30am last night just trying to recover a little piece of fluff that I fear is destined for the firepit tonight!

Thank you for listening, I feel better now.

Anyone else want to come in here and have a little cry?

Sorry you had to go threw that big nasty mess. This might seem kinda strange but, you could try to put some sort of paper on the bottom of the sticky side and sew threw it. So that the sticky side isn't actually touching your feed. Then when your done with that section, just rip out the paper like you would if you were paper piecing. (It's a quilting thing, don't know if you have ever heard of it.) I don't know if this helps, but hope so.

Well, what a good idea... now what am I going to do with my big plans for the Malden Mills Rubber Backed Fleece of (Sewing Machine) Death Bonfire 2006? I was going to invite you, too!

Sorry to ruin your plans. I'm having a hard time with this pollywog diaper pattern, could we burn that instead?

Of course, there's room for all of our frustration in the firepit! We need a theme song... how about 'Burn baby, burn... diaper inferno!' and a mascot? Oh, wait.... :

Let me tell you, I've come close to having a lot of burn fests here... And I've got room for a nice big bonfire!

Sorry you had a bad night, but I love the paper idea. I know I've seen that recommended in other places... They have that water soluble paper backing stuff or you can even use plain old tissue paper, apparently.

I find that I usually end up just sewing things completely wrong - like the time I was serging my first diaper and had one piece going one way and the other piece going the other way, so when it was all serged up the side, the front panel was serged to the back tab, and vice versa! This was on a 30+ year old flannel baby blanket that really can't take alot of seam ripping. I seam ripped anyway, and the diaper is being used now. I doubt it will make it to baby #2 though. The soaker is already falling apart!

Then the other night, I was sewing a blouse (after doing some nifty fun pattern alterations that I just learned how to do), and it has a forward shoulder with a neat little gather on the front part of the shoulder seam. I sewed that front part, made the little gather in the appropriate spot, sewed ti to the back shoulder, turned it around to admire my beautiful, perfect gathered shoulder. Then I realized I sewed that front piece to the WRONG SIDE!!! I had to un-sew and then put it on the other shoulder. Doh!

So those are the kinds of sewing mistakes I typically make - just plain old stupid mistakes. At least yours was not a mistake, but was just difficult to work with fabric! And that paper idea should get you some beautiful newborn covers!!!!

I'll join the party!

So, I was making my first curtains. Just simple rod pocket curtains. Simple. Right? heh...I sewed through the rod pocket. I had to get out the seam ripper on fix them. dumb dumb dumb.

But I'm mosty pitying myself because I have no time to sew! I get a few minutes of free time here and there...not enough to sew. It took me 2 weeks to finish a simple pair of panels for one window. I've got beautiful apple and fox print fabrics waiting to be made into diapers. And the most gorgeous wool sweater in shades of coffee waiting to be made into a soaker. I actually dreamed about that sweater last night.

I feel for you

I use a teflon foot I bought at Joannes and I use wax paper on the bottom.
You can rip the wax paper off after you sew. I hope that helps..

Oh, I can't believe your patience with the 30 year old baby blanket!
