NB Fitted Layer help needed.....

Thread Starter
My very first dipe I made with only the outer and inner layers.

I found a new pattern and it used 4 layers, I compromised and for my other dipes I was using 3.
*outer layer
*center layer w/ soaker pad sewn to it
*inner lining

1) Could you please share with me how many layers you make?

2)And..... do you make dipes with less layers for use in the summer?

Sorry... that's 2 questions .. but I would be MOST GRATEFUL for any or all opinions and advice!

I sew my fitteds and AIO's the same way
Outer PUL or print(fitted)
one layer of absorbant material in the body
Then a I do a 2 layer trifold soaker sew it in the front or back to attach it since I dont have a snap press (makes 7 layers of fabric between the body and trifold)
It has worked well for my DD with my fitteds.

I do 2-3 body layers plus a snap-in soaker (and usually a doubler). The total amount of layers depends on what type of fabric I am using. For all flannel I use 3 body layers + 8 layers in the soaker and 6 layers in the doubler.

I haven't made newborn fitteds yet, but for my toddler, I just do two full body layers (sew soaker pad to inner material if sewn-in).

During summer, I would do the same thing, unless your child pees less during the summer. Seriously, I live in AL, and didn't have any problems with my summer newborn in prefolds and PUL covers, and he's one that used to get overheated easily (not due to diaper, but due to long sleeves, blankets, etc.). I had to keep my little 29 weeker preemie boy in a onesie during the day, despite him being small, lacking fat, and being new at that whole body temp regulation thing.

One nice thing about cloth diapers - they're breatheable! Use a fleece or wool cover and it's even more breatheable! PUL is not very breatheable, but it's moreso than sposies, which are plastic! So I wouldn't bother making diapers different for different seasons. The thickness is dependent on what you need for absorbancy, not for warmth/cooling.

It depends on the fabric and if I want to make lay-in or snap-in soakers...and sometimes it depends on if I'm too lazy to cut out 3 full body layers. Right now I have a stack of diapers to sew with a body layer of hemp jersey, a body layer of hemp fleece and a soaker layer of hemp terry (with a soaker core of 2 layers terry). I'm also making a lay-in doubler with 2 layers or terry with 2 layers of terry in the core. Sometimes with flannel dipes I'll do 2 body layers of flannel with 6 soaker layers, or 3 body layers with 4 soaker layers.
Oh, and for the summer I like to either beef up my fitteds or used thicker doublers since I like my guy to go coverless in the summer. On a newborn I don't think it'd make much of a difference. Like boscopup said, cloth is breatheable!
