are you having tests just because you're older?

i have never paid any attention to my age. my son was born when i was 36. now i am 40.

but i was surprised to hear some women are having prenatal tests just because they are over 35.

my midwife last time waved her hand at the idea that over 35 was "high-risk." do you think age based high risk might be about attitude more than anything?

she told me she prefered older clients (although she did provide homebirth care to teen moms for soical services) because we were sometimes better able to handle the stress and fear around birthing with more "grace." (notice she said sometimes)

how about you? do you or your care provider consider you high risk because you are over 35?

I have my first appointment with my midwife on Saturday, I'll be very interested on whether her approach is different because I'm over 40. In our conversations so far, I have not gotten that impression that I am different than any other women who's having a baby because I'm older.

My DH & I won't be having an Amnio nor a CVS or whatever else is out there to detect chromonal abnormalities, we've already decided on this. I don't even know what all there is after being out of the loop for 16 years .
