another option for fold-back tabs?

Okay, I will admit that my diapers and covers lack fold-back tabs. I never remember to sew them on at the right time and besides, I'm way too excited to just get the thing done and see how it looks to bother with the extra step. Besides, if I can re-seal the dipe and turn it inside-out for washing, how important are they really?

Except that they are come undone in the machine and get filled with lint and rip my serging and ...

So, here's my thought: would it work to just cut a handful of loop-side pieces of aplix and keep a little dish of them at the change table and maybe one at the washer/dryer, then at some point just stick the square to the diaper wing aplix for washing? Would this work? I don't think it would be a pain to remember to do (no more than folding back the tabs) and I would be just if I could appease the guilt I have about totally not wanting to sew the fold-back tabs on.

Thoughts?

My thought is - do you really want to be handling smelly, wet/dirty diapers more than you have to?? I'd make sure the dish is by the change table.

That would totally work. I don't have laundry tabs either. I'm too lazy. But I don't serge, either so nothing gets ripped. plus... the velcro-ey part usually gets stuck to the microfiber towels .

LOL, yeah I was totally avoiding calling myself 'lazy' in my OP, but the truth is, I'm too lazy to sew on the tabs.

I'm happy that you ladies think this would work! I'll keep the bowl at the change table and try to remember to use the bits.

I don't own a serger either, which is why it's such a shame to rip out dipes I actually paid money for! :

they often go on after the first wearing at our house. I too am way too eager to see baby in the new diaper. Having a dish of loop by your change table will totally work!

I just wanted to chime with my limited experience: I have a side aplix diaper I got from the TP that has laundry tabs, but they are not the fold back type. They are not actually sewn onto the fabric of the diaper. They are loose, except for one end, which is sewn to the diaper at the same point that the hook is. Does that make sense? I didn't realize it would be tricky to describe!

Anyway, I really hate it like that. The reason is, the loop is the same size as the hook (which is normal, but usually the loop is also sewn to the wing, which is bigger), and it is really hard to get the two pieces apart. So, my suggestion, if you're going to do it this way, would be to make your loop laundry tabs bigger than your hook. It's just easier to get it off if there is something to hold onto, kwim? Otherwise you're trying to peel the two pieces apart using your fingernails.

IME my diapers don't have laundry tabs, Im too cheap to have to buy MORE aplix just for aplix, Id rather have money for new machines, sergers< etc.. im a spoiled brat when it comes to sewing diapers. Most of my inner body layers are suedecloth and I fold the tabs to the suedecloth and they stay stuck thru the was and dry, same with the couple I have made with microfleece. The rest, yeah mostly they stick to the microfiber towels I'm washing too and some even get pilly, I just get the seam ripper and run it across the tabs after the diapers are dry to get most of the pills off of them. I'm the queen of frugal when it comes to diaper sewing, or so I'd like to think so I wont use my aplix as laundry tabs... speaking of aplix (actually I use the touch tape now) but i needa order more. Another thing I've seen done is making laundry pockets, I forget which pattern it is, but its where you sew a pocket on the outside of the tab then fold the pocket over the velcro tab before washing... make sense?

Good point about the expense of the good stuff (not to mention the hassle of waiting for it to come across the border...) Maybe this would be a good use for all the cheapie velcro I bought when I was first sewing dipes & covers and didn't know that the MDC mamas were right, that stuff really doesn't last. Now I have rolls of it, so I see no harm (and no expense) in using the scraps for hook-protection! And I will definitly cut it bigger that the hook tabs! Thx!

Yeah, I just wanted to say that I do the little strips of loose loop side to put over the hook. And it's not really like I have a whole bunch of them laying around or in a little dish. All the loop strips are on the diapers, except for the one that the baby is wearing. When I put a fresh diaper on him, I just take off the strips and set them by the wipes on the changing table. Then, when that diaper comes off, the strips go back on the diaper before it goes in the pail. The strips stay on the diaper until the next time that diaper is worn. So you will only have two little pieces of loop side to keep track of at a time. It really works pretty well.
But I have been starting to put the little pockets on my wings, and I like that even better. The pockets have the extra strips of loop sewn right on. The loop strips are then on the outside of the wing while the diaper is being worn, and they double as a cross-over attaching place. Then, as I'm taking the diaper off, I just flip those little pockets inside out in one swift movement, before the diaper is even off of his bum. The strips of loop are now covering the hook side, and sealed together on the inside of the pocket. Those pockets NEVER turn inside out in the wash, that would be absolutely impossible. You just have to make sure that the end of your wing is wide enough to easily turn the pocket inside out. Otherwise it's a real pain to turn inside out or flip right side out.
