Anyone seen Curious George? - Page 2

We just took our 34 month old son this afternoon. He was enthralled. Dh and I thought it was cute. George was adorable. My son laughed many belly laughs at certain scenes.

However, I was horrified at all the commercials before the movie. We got to the cinema a little early and even before the previews there were trailers for other movies and lots of ads for...a multinational junk food chain, and multinational soda company, the products from which have never touched my son's lips. I said to my husband, what a captive audience. It just brought to mind some of the articles in Mothering about kids being exploited by marketing from huge companies. The ADA calls for kids to drink very little soda and yet the advertising is all around us. This is why we don't watch television, just certain videos.

Also, even in the movie previews, I was disappointed by the violent slapstick humor. I can't recall the movies but I was saddened by the violence. And these are all, as another poster mentioned, probably rated G.

I also saw a mom give her son a shove when they were walking up the stairs. He was maybe 8 or 9 and they were sitting right behind us. I know everyone has a bad day now and then but it bummed me out. OTOH, I did see a lot of loving parenting from other parents. A lot of people spending time with their little ones watching a cute movie.

Well, we tried to go with our three year old (first movie experience), but she caught the end of the last preview (we were trying to wait until they were over) and she freaked out. It was soooo loud and the images were fast, intense, and a bit scary (I think it was a preview for a Disney movie). She wanted to leave, but once we left she was so sad because she really wanted to see the "monkey movie". Awww. She's very sensitive -- I'm thinking we'll need to just rent the DVD when it comes out. But seriously, what's with the volume at movie theatres? It's just way too loud!

We took my 2 1/2 yo this afternoon (his first movie) and he really enjoyed it. It was a sweet, gentle movie and I really liked the message of encouraging natural curiosity, but I'm glad the blatant product placements for Dole and Volkswagon went right over DS's head. Because I'm a rookie to the kid's movie thing, I never even thought about trailers (I had researched this movie ahead of time, decided it was appropriate, not scary, etc) and then there were about 4 or 5 trailers that I would consider inappropriate for a lot of the younger children (scary or obnoxious - I avoid "obnoxious" like the plague...)

We talked a lot to DS ahead of time about what to expect - dark, big screen, lots of people sitting together, loud, etc and I think that was helpful in preparing him for the experience...or maybe it was the natural anesthetic of way too much greasy movie popcorn

My kids 4 & 7 both really enjoyed it. I thought it was cute too. It seemed like the first movie in a long time that was really made for little kids. I hope it does well. We could use more non-violent, non-sexual, non-obnoxious/rude movies for kids.

DH, DS, and I, along with DS' best bud and his parents, saw it yesterday. LOVED it. We all did. Very sweet and gentle.

I hated the trailers though. 3 movies that DS is most definitely not going to see.

Despite the Dole and VW references, the only item the movie made me run out and buy is the Jack Johnson CD. We have been playing that all day in the car. It rocks!

We saw it tonight and DS (almost 4) really enjoyed it (it was his first movie). I am glad we were running late and missed the trailers though...by the sounds of it that might have been a deal breaker!

We took our very young 2 year old (not even 2.5) to see it because he's a monkey fanatic. It's ALL about monkeys at our house....

He loved the whole thing. It held his interest & didn't scare him at all. This from a boy who has been TERRIFIED at things that have happened on Dora (which meant we never had to watch it again! Hooray for me!) and Little Bear.

we just took dd & she loved it. she sat through most of it (the end started to encroach on nap time) & has been talking about it since. we were lucky to only have trailers- no yucky commercials!

dh laughed out loud a few times he's so cute. we were very happy with the simple approach- dh was so afraid they'd make george talk!!!

We saw it yesterday! It was dd's first real movie and everything went pretty well.

On the way home, we talked about her needing a bath before bedtime, and she said, "Can I have blue and red bubbles and cucumbers on my eyes?"
