Is velour like microfleece?

I love the idea of having a really soft layer next to ds's skin, but am hopeless when it comes to caring for micro-fleece topped anything! I always seem to get repelling and no amount of stripping and careful wash systems seem to help - I strip and the first wash makes them repel again. I have given up on trying and given away all of my fleece/microsuede topped diapers.

What I'm wondering is if velour has repelling issues. If I am lucky enough to find 80% or higher cotton content in a velour that should just be absorbant, but soft when it's dry - right?

I'm planning on making a bunch of pre-fitteds and wondered if a layer of velour on top would make them more comfortable (although this would be bulky. . .).

Any advice?

Yes Velour can be used in a diaper and is absorbant as long as it is at least 80 percent cotton. It doesn't have stay dry feeling though but is VERY soft.

I just did exactly that (used velour as a top layer on some pre-fitteds) and I really like it! It's super absorbant and I don't find it that bulky (I mean, no more bulky that a prefold all folded up and pinned/snappi'd). And sooo soft! I think you'll love it.

I love velour and it stays so soft, wash after wash. It does get damp, but it is still comfortable. I used to use microfleece, but my ds was getting so many rashes, and now with velour, cotton interlock and flannel he stays rash free, even though he is sitting in wet diapers. The soap really washes out of the cotton I guess. Microfleece holds on to it like crazy.

I velour!!!! I top everything with it! Mama pads, diapers, soakers... Everything has velour against DS's skin. Like you, I could NOT keep microfleece or suedecloth smell-free. If I use too little soap, they don't get clean. If I use too much soap, the rest of the diapers get buildup. And I'm not washing my polyester stuff separately!

Velour acts like any other cotton - it absorbs wetness and doesn't get the weird polyester stink. It also stays oh so soft, wash after wash. Even when wet, it's still soft!

If you have a Hancocks, they have some really nice 80/20 velour. I just got some velour through a co-op (TheJoyOfSewing), and it's not quite as thick/soft as the stuff at Hancocks, even though it's also 80/20. I needed a color that my Hancocks didn't have (they have very few colors, and you can't order it online!). Next time, I'll have to find another source for alternate colors. My Hancocks has navy and peach, which are both good colors, but I needed something to match a camo diaper!
