laminating co-op

Is this an economical way to go or is it really just for those who reeeeeaally want a really cute fabric to be laminated?? I'm buying a few print PUL cuts but am curious about the co-op. I would imagine there's a minimum fabric length? Could I sew several fabric cuts together and have them all laminated as one and then cut them apart when I get it back?

And is it pretty much anything they can laminate? Like I could have some cute flannel, or poly/cotton/poly-cotton prints? Has anyone seen laminated flannel??

I don't think you really save any money this way...it's just a way to get the exact print that you want. You end up paying $2-$3 per yard for laminating and then there lots of different shipping costs (to and from the factory, then to you).

The one I did required single cuts of 2 yards each but I think some people will let you sew smaller cuts together. You can do any fabric you want...you can even do flannel but I think it wicks like crazy so most people don't recommend it.

Wicks THROUGH the fabric?? What are regular PUL prints made from? Some say woven and some say knit? What's the fabric content of those? Poly? I plan to bind my a lot of my prints with FOE, not turn them.

I don't think it wicks through the fabric. It wicks at the edges. The actual fabric itself works fine, so you should be able to bind with FOE and not have wicking. Regular solid color PUL is 100% polyester, so that's why it doesn't wick.

Print PUL can get really expensive, so that's why most people buy 1/2 yard cuts or diaper cuts. IMO, laminating the fabric through a coop only pays off if you need a lot, or if you're selling it. I mean, you have to buy the fabric, sew it together (or pay to have them sew it together for you), ship it to the coop owner, they ship it to Fabrite & back to them, they cut it up (usually there's a fee involved for cutting) and then you pay to have it shipped to you. By the time you pay for all of the shipping, plus the fabric & laminating, it can easily be $10+ per yard.

And that doesn't count the original cost of the fabric!

Yes, but I can't wait to get mine! And do it again in a couple of months. I do plan on selling cuts though. That's they only way I could convince dh to let me do it. I got some cute prints in though, 8 yds total. One is a Sesame Street poly/flannel that's so cute, I can't wait to make dipes with it! I already made 2 covers with what I had leftover here. I am already looking at fabrics for the next coop.

Kat - do you mind me asking how much it's costing you to have those 8 yards done?

Sure! For this coop it's $2.80/yd, plus I had to pay $1 for them to sew my fabric b/c I didn't want to do it myself. It cost me $6 to ship 6 yds priority. The other 2 yrds I bought from them, so I didn't have to ship. Plus a $2 cutting fee. Then shipping back to me when it's done. I figure it's just over $8/yd including what I paid for the fabric I bought. That's not too bad in my book since I'll have the prints I want and chose. This coop is through CradledInCloth1. HTH!
