walking to school without you? - Page 2

My friend allows her 7 year old to walk to school himself. It's about 2 blocks away and he has only 1 street to cross (right in front of the house). She sends him with a walkie-talkie and they talk all on the way there and after school he has to check in when he's leaving via walkie-talkie and they usually end up blabbing all the way home. Works out great

My time is coming...

This is a topic that concerns me also. We are getting ready to move into a house ( yea!!!) after suffering through years in an apartment. The new house will be in a nice, quiet neighborhood but depending on where we buy, the house may be too far to walk for DS6. So far, we've been in busy city areas and I've always driven him to school in the AM and then his babysitter picked him up after school.

Does anyone have any thoughts about how best to do the "meet & greet" with the neighbors to find out which (if any) of the neighboring kids might be good walking companions? I guess I've been protective by default (my safety zone) and have a little trepidation about making that transition...
