At what age do naps stop? - Page 2

Both mine still nap. usually at the same time

my 3 year old still takes long naps, but we are really bad about bedtime...which is probably far too late. I think the little guy is wiped out by mid-day because of this.

Around 18 months here,too.

Normally some time between 2-5 years. But there are some that stop much later, and some who stop earlier. I say this from 5 years teaching 3-5 y/o preschool, 5 years as a nanny, tons of babysitting before that, and having my own kids. That said, my SILs 4 kids napped until age 7, and her 2 1/2 year old still takes 2 2-hour naps each day!!?!! My guys sleep at the same time each day, on average 1 1/2 hours (from noonish-1:45 usually). Sometimes the 3 year old skips naps though.

My DD is almost 4. She gets a nap still at daycare M-F. Kids can choose whether they want to nap or have a quiet activity (kids in her room are 3-5). Her teacher says she is usually the first one out!

On weekends, she will *usually* nap for about 2 hours now. I LIVE FOR THE NAPS!!!!! Either I take one too to catch up, or use the time for real me time. She can go without a nap now and then. Bedtime then is only maybe a hour earlier then.

I think generally, the transition with naps (remember going from 2 to 1?) is painful (for us).

eta: I'm a napper too. I see that my DD's sleep style is pretty much like mine. I wouldn't be surpised if she still has at least the occasional weekend nap to catch up even once she starts school at age 5.

My 4yo stopped napping soon after he turned 3. I strongly suspect my 17mo will give up his naps before too long. He's never been a very good napper anyway and has been pushing his nap back later and later and wanting to play instead of nurse when I lay down with him. : Oh well, he seems to need a lot less sleep than I need him to!

DD is going to be 5 soon, and hasn't had a naptime for maybe more than two years now. That's not to say she doesn't take them though! Some days, especially in the car, she will fall asleep around 2 or 3. Depending on activity levels and the time she rose, of course

The Lucky One - Kids are typically in bed between 8 and 9 pm, get up between 6 and 6:30am. Some nights I know that ds doesn't actually go to sleep until after 10, but trying to force the issue just makes it worse.
Dd goes to sleep at the same time, still wakes up 2-3 times a night to nurse, and usually gets grouchily at 6:30 - on the weekends she will sometimes let us sleep in until 8.

Ds is 4.5 and still napping 1.5 hours probably 6 days a week.....sleeps from 9-7 M-F, 9-8am on weekends....I wish I could let him sleep later during the week, he has always been a nightowl.

At 2 my son was still napping 5-6 days a week. At 2.5 it was 3-5 times a week. At 3, he naps 1-3 days a week. I'm ready for him to give them up altogether, he stays up way too late on nap days (like 2am late!)
Normally he sleeps about 9-10 hours at night. If he's REALLY tired he sometimes is out for up to 12 hours a night (with one or two night wakings to pee and nurse).

The range seems to be 18 mos to 5, but I think 3.5-4 is really typical.

Sometimes it's lifestyle - a kid who is taking naps about half the time might just end up stopping sooner because the family is out running around in the afternoon.

DS napped until around age 3. DD1, who is 3 (Today! : : : ), stopped napping on a regular basis around 19 months, when her sister was born. I tried to tandem nurse, couldn't handle it, weaned, and that was the end of daily naps. She'll still nap in the car sometimes, but she's a little fireball and can go on and on even when she's completely exhausted. She goes to bed around 7 though, and sleeps 12 hours. DD3, 17 months, is, thankfully, still napping daily.

Thanks for all the responses Mama's! What a wide age range! Well, I don't think we're ready to give up naps yet...we'll just have to try to take them slightly earlier in the day. Hopefully this will help him go to bed earlier at night. Thanks again for all the responses!

Anna started giving them up shortly before she turned 2 but then I got pg and needed a nap too so we would nap together and she got a later bedtime. She officially stopped naps at around 3. Kayla gave them up the summer before she turned 3 and her bedtime moved up to 7ish.

right after turning 2. she does sleep at night about 12 hours...sometimes a little less.

They both are in bed by 7-7:30 each night.

For those of you with older (4-5 year olds) nappers, do they have a late bedtime?
My 4 yr old naps about 2 hours maybe 3-5 days a week, depending on how active we have been that morning. He naps the same amount of time as his 2 yr old sister. The 1 yr old usually wakes up before everyone!

They all go to bed at 7ish and wake for the day at 6:30am, regardless of whether they napped.
