Making another wrap, have a ?

I am making a new wrap. The last time I made a wrap I simply cut the fabric. I want a neater look, no jagged edges. Mamatoto.org suggested using a serger. I dont have one nor do I know what it does. I only have acesss to a sewing machine. If I were to buy a wrap, a gypsy for example, thats what the fabric kind of resembles. Would it look like the fabric was simply cut, or are the sides sewn or are they segered?

Or fold over the edge and do a zigzag stitch for a more professional look. Or fold the edge over twice (hide the cut edge).
