The Devil in the White City. Can't remember the name of the author right now.

It's about a serial killer and the construction of the 1894 (?) World's Fair in Chicago. The author put so much work into the research and writing of this book. It's historical, but the writer's words are also poetry.

My new fave book.

Glimpses of the Moon by Edith Wharton,
The Children by Edith Wharton (not attachment parenting at all, but lovingly care for by oldest sister and family friend. Very beautiful story)

A Confederacy of Dunces . . . John Kennedy Toole, one of the best-written and funniest books I've ever read.

A series by Van Reid: "Cordelia Underwood" is the first one . . . there are 4, I think. Very well-written and funny. Other titles are "Daniel Plainway" "Mrs. Roberto" . . . gosh, I can't remember the rest. Maybe there are 5 now. Hmmm. I'll have to go consult my bookshelf because I have them all downstairs . . .

(I'm big into good writing . . . I've become a bit of a snob with books. I don't want to read it unless the writing is good. Doesn't matter how good a story it is, if the writing stinks it bugs me too much to read it. Which is too bad, in some ways, because there are a lot of good storytellers writing books who are not good writers.)

"No Time On My Hands" by Grace Snyder

A beautiful account of frontier life. It's like Little House on the Prairie but for grown-ups. (not that Little House isn't for grown-ups too)

Sweetness in the Belly by Camilla Gibb - This was shortlisted for the Giller (for those from the US, this is a very prestigious Canadian prize) this year. I really enjoyed it. It's the story of a woman who was born of white English parents in Egypt, raised by a Muslim teacher, came of age in Ethiopia in a tumultuous time, and who then has to come to terms with it all as she works with refugees back in England. It's essentially a story of what defines family and home, and touches on a lot of themes about what it means to be a woman. (Nod to NFL: It includes a more or less UC in a park in London at the opening of the book!)

A Good House by Bonnie Burnard - A previous Giller prize winner and one of my top ten faves of all time. It is a multi-generational story of a lovely, complex family, with lots of imperfect but wonderful people. I highly, highly recommend this book.

Okay, here's a little irony for you. I'm an English teacher, but I hate teaching or reading novels.

Yeah, we do a lot of plays, stories, poetry, and nonfiction in the Baudelaire classroom.

Anyhoo, the stuff I've read recently that I would buy and read again if I had a GC?

1. Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed

2.E=MC2, a Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation

3. Ironically, I read this one a few weeks before Katrina:
Isaac's Storm

4. Ghosts of Vesuvius -- a remarkable book that manages to link together some very disparate subjects: Vesuvius, Titanic, and the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

As I look back on this list, I see I have a thing for big disasters.

One of my favorite series is the Mark of the Lion trilogy by Francine Rivers. It's historical fiction (christian) set in the time of the Roman Empire and is very well-researched and written IMO.

#1: A Voice in the Wind

#2: An Echo in the Darkness

#3: As Sure as the Dawn

I need to read them again, it's been a long time
