Sue Monk Kidd's The Mermaid Chair, and The Secret Life of Bees. Both are equally fabulous!

Ooohhh, my dream present! Hope you had fun!

The next time you are browsing at the bookstore take a look at these 2 books. They are oversize, so they might be on the top shelf:

Hungry Planet by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio is a book of photos of families from around the world with all the food they eat in a week. NPR also has photos from this book online.

Peter Menzel also did a similar book called Material World. This one shows photos of families from around the world with all their possessions.

I am currently reading Food Politics (I kind of have food on the brain ) by Marion Nestle. It's all about how the food industry gets people to eat food that isn't good for them.

These are works of fiction I love:

Love For Lydia by H.E. Bates

Fathers and Sons By Ivan Turgenev

These are the most startling non-fiction books I have or am reading;

PowerDown By Richard Heinberg (about the coming energy crisis)

The Sibling Society By Robert Bly

Vaccinations: the People Speak By Neil Z. Miller

There are others....

I'm reading Oh, Pure and Radiant Heart by Lydia Millet. The 3 principal scientists of Manhattan Project turn up in the 21st century and are champions for peace. Its pretty funny.

I have that book on reserve at the library. I have food on the brain too!
The great books I am loving right now are, incidentally, foodie books also.
I love:
Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl
Untangling My Chopsticks: A Culinary Sojourn in Kyoto by Victoria Abbot Riccardi

Both have great writing, making me think about experiencing food in a total-body way. Highly recommended for anyone who cooks, or eats!

and lol, I was about to say I couldn't get into that Irving book for the life of me, but actually I did like that one - I just couldn't get into Son of the Circus or Until I Find You, and *then* I noticed your little typo, which makes it funny.

I love Sherman! I still (sheesh) haven't read Ten Little Indians, but I have a signed hardcover. I think I'm too afraid to mess it up now...

I loved Reservation Blues! That would be my rec.

I've seen the guy speak twice, and he's hilarious. He comes off as really elitest, though. Must be some sort of writers ego.
