ultrasound early pregnancy question

hi ladies,
I'm new and I have 2 boys and expecting my third. I saw my OB the other day and he did an ultrasound exam. I thought I was in my mid 6th week but he said the ultrasound indicated I was 5 weeks 4 days. A strong hearbeat was detected and he was hopeful. I didn't chart that month and used OPK Clear Blue. I had a surge (one of the bars was darker than the control) so we had sex that night. The next afternoon the bar was lighter than the day before but it was the same color as the control line. So I thought I ovulated so we didn't have any more sex. Lo and behold I conceived that month. Because I didn't chart, I didn't know exactly when I ovulated.

What do you think of this ladies and should I be concerned because the baby is smaller than I expected?

That's why I hate ultrasounds.

That said, I would rather that they move the date back (as in your case) than forward because when it comes down to the end, you don't want them inducing a baby that's supposedly 42 weeks but turns out to be smaller than that.

Do you not have any idea when you did the OPK thing? That would be as good as charting since charting tells you when you ovulated.

Really, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I know it's hard, but having more information doesn't always ease the mind.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as there is a strong heartbeat and the baby's making progress, that's all that matters.
Doesn't it say on the opk that it predicts within 24-36 hrs? Then maybe the little one just took longer to implant than usual. Still, I just wouldn't worry about it as long as there's a heartbeat!

I think katiesmom is right, especially if you have a caregiver that you trust to keep this in mind when making any decisions about induction.

I also wanted to chime in that I just had a U/S at 7 weeks, and I was so grateful to have confirmed that the baby was alive, well, and not ectopic. These fears, after miscarriage of 1 baby and one-sided pain with this one, were becoming debilitating. They can be scary if not taken with a grain of salt, but they can also be a gift for some of us However, their EDD was WAY OFF, given than I know the date of conception

De-lurking to say...You *are* in your mid 6th week. In three more days, you will be 6 weeks pg. Just like I am in my 35th year. In a few weeks that year will be completed and I will say I am 35 years old. Make sense?

Or are you saying you thought you had completed 6+ weeks?

I wouldn't be worried about your baby at all at this point! I figure all babies should read fewer weeks than what the 'calculators' say we are... if you think about it, the calcs include the first two weeks of the cycle when you couldn't have been preggie because you didn't even ovulate yet! So, when the doc or midwife says you're 6 weeks (or whatever) the baby has only been cookin' for around 4-5 weeks! So, of course an ultrasound would read them smaller than the number of weeks we're figuring we are.

I'm not doing ANY ultrasounds this time around. We did two last time and they caused us more fear and concern than was warranted. They are only SO accurate, but docs and midwives who use them rely on them as if the info determined from them was written in stone.... it's NOT!!!

Since there was a heartbeat at your appointment it seems to me you're totally on track. 6 weeks is generally the earliest they can get one... so your baby sounds fine!
