Doctor in MN who opposes ADD

I believe that my son has been misdiagnosed with ADD. It's complicated, but I need to have him reevaluated because the misdiagnosis is affecting my ability to enroll him in school. Can anyone suggest a liberal-minded child psychologist who could change my son's diagnosis? Preferably in Minnesota or elsewhere in the midwest. Many thanks, Panama Mom

Hi Panamamom,

You may want to post this question in the Minnesota/Wisconsin section of the "Finding Your Tribe" forum. (And maybe Iowa & Illinois as well.)

Best of luck to you!

As far as I know, unless you're trying to enroll in a private school, public schools (this includes charter schools) can't turn a child away for having ADD (according to the law). I'm curious as to where you've tried to enroll, but completely understand if you don't want to disclose that information. Along with getting a second opinion, perhaps you could check into this aspect as well.

Best of luck to you!

That is true.

You may want to ask a person who is affiliated with Scientology since they do not believe in ADD or drugging children....

Or look into Benjamin Feingold...http://www.add-adhd-infoplus.com/feingold-diet.html

You should know, that some consider his thinking quackery...http://www.quackwatch.org/01Quackery.../feingold.html, but I do know personally of children who have been helped by his diet over the years.

Well, if you think he's been misdiagnosed, does it matter who you go to in order to get a second opinion? kwim? If he is not ADD, with adequate interview and observation, it seems you'd get a different opinion than the one you have. I mean, I can understand wanting to find a duck when you're looking for a duck, but if you believe so strongly that the diagnosis is incorrect, than a second opinion should likely just confirm that?

Thanks!

thanks to all for advice and suggestions...

about schools - the problem is that we're overseas, where I work for the US gov't. international schools, unlike public schools in the US, don't have to accept your kids if they have special needs (even mild special needs) and often don't. the other problem, and the reason I need to have my son reevaluated, is that the US gov't won't let us go back overseas next tour if we can't clear up the matter of his ADD.

sometimes I really miss the good ol' U.S. of A.!

Deborah Clemmensen in Minnetonka is not into labelling. She will ask for your input as well when labels are necessary for insurance purposes.

Good luck!

Even if your child has ADD-like symptoms, that should not keep him or her from enrolling in school. My child definitely has been diagnosed as ADD, yet the school does not really need to know the "diagnosis" unless that child requires some modified lesson plans. Many schools are willing to work with this. If your child was labeled by a private psychologist, you do not have to tell the school. You also should be careful in trying to enroll him in a school that does not want him. I am sure your child has many wonder gifts that are associated with the ADD personality...creativity, artistry, enthusiasm. This should not be seen as a disability but rather a special ability. Please find the right placement for him.
