Emotionally "easy" books?

I'm looking for suggestions of books that are easy on the "tough stuff". DH is not much of one to read for pleasure and his main complaint is that he wants to relax while reading, not think to much or get all upset- I have to find something that will make him laugh (but is not simplistic or overly feminine in it's humor), something where people don't die or horrible things happen to them (easy on the emotional turmoil), that is intelligent (but not difficult to read when "relaxing") and that is not too sappy or juvenile. For example, he LOVES the James Herriot books (the ones about the English veterinarian in the 1930's- DH is a vet and the stories are intelligent, funny, and easy reading- enjoyed by DH when he was a boy and enjoyed just as much today as grown man and a veterinarian himself!).

Any ideas?

He may like other similar books... I can't think of any names, but the ones like Year in Provence and the like.
