mouth stinks in the mornings?

dd is 3.5 and in the last several mornings i noticed her mouth stinks badly.

this could be a cavity, i suppose -- she has several dark spots, which the dentist identified as 'precavity decay, not to worry about for now'. i will book her in.

but the smell is exactly like DH's when he complains about stomach acid.

she has not complained about anything stomach related, and is behaving normally.

could this be something gastro intestinal?

it seems that the smell is not every morning.

there is no smell during the day.

just worried.

Yes it could very well be acid reflux, and if it is that will contribute to tooth decay. Try elevating her bed quite a bit and see if that helps. Also, have her eat dinner earlier, not drink a lot of water right before bedtime, and avoid spicy or hard to digest foods at dinner.

There are mild OTC meds that can also help to give before bedtime. (Do NOT use Mylanta long-term on growing children. You are safer with something like Zantac)

thanks.

she did eat right before bedtime yesterday. but she loves to eat a snack before bedtime, and she won't go to bed without drinking a cup of water. we don't eat spicy foods.

she just had some stinky diarhea. and she is a bit low on energy now.

she normally has very loose stools. is this a sign as well?

would not she have other complains?

I've noticed that sometimes breath smells bad in the morning right before someone is getting sick. My mom called that the sick smell and I've noticed it with my DD as well.

Yup, I call it "sore throat breath".
My ds sleeps with a paci so his mouth is all crusty and his breath smells icky when he wakes up. Plus he is a mouthbreather.

You could also have a "mouth breather". If you look it up online you'll find more info. But you should make sure you take her to the dentist first. I suspected that 4.5 year old was a mouth breather but I wanted to first see that he didn't have any dental issues going on.

GERD won't cause loose stools or lower GI issues. Well my dd has severe acid production that causes acid diaper rash if she doesn't take her meds, but that's not the norm. Maybe she's starting to come down with something. How long has this been going on?

I agree it could be mouth-breathing too. Does she have allergies? Does she snore?

Both my little people are like that. If they have bad breath it's because they're teething or getting sick.

thanks everybody.

she is 3 y 9m, and this is the first several days that this happened. today her breath was still the same odour, but much weaker.

she is not teething, obviously. and even though she was a bit low on energy yesterday, i don't think she is getting sick.

she has no known allergies, but has mild asthma, which didn't manifest itself in a long time.

lately i noticed she IS breathing as though her nose is a bit obstructed, but she does't breathe through her mouth. maybe at night, though?

i looked at her brown spots on the teeth, and if anything, they are getting smaller, rather than worse. we will see the dentist anyway, and we have our family check-up on march 2nd. so i will ask then.

thanks you!!!

Infected tonsils can cause some nasty breathe too.
