What's the best car/booster seat for 3 year old?

my ds turns three on 3/7. Our car seat is still fine for a while yet (as he's a long but SKINNY little man) but it's WORN and we want a new one. Any suggestions for a "big kid" seat?

How much does he weigh and what seat is he in currently?

If he's still a ways from 40lbs, I'd suggest looking at the Evenflo (Chase, Traditions, Generations) or Graco (Ultra or Platinum Cargo) combo seats. They have the highest harness slots of all the combo seats that harness to 40lbs. If he's closer to 40lbs, or if you plan to harness him past 40lbs, I would suggest looking at the Britax Marathon/Decathlon/Boulevard (harness to 65lbs), the Britax Regent (harnesses to 80lbs), the SunshineKids Radian (harnesses to 65lbs) or the Cosco Apex (also harnesses to 65lbs, but must be used only where the vehicle's seatback/headrest will support the back of the car seat).

Hope that helps get you started!

Our newly three-year-olds are super comfy and have plenty of room to grow in their Britax boulevards. Highly recommended!! I would wait on a belt-positioning booster until he's too big for a harnessed seat.

HTH!

We have a tall lightweight too, and definitely I recommend considering harness slot height when you buy. If the above suggestions don't get you there, you can try carseatdata.org (I think it's org, anyway) for measurements of everything.

Britax seats are excellent. DS is currently in an Evenflo Chase, which....well, it fits. But it is not great, and certainly not Best anything. The adjustment system is awkward, and it has all these cupholders and armrest things that ds got attached to but that won't stay on the seat....: Also hard to install. If you want the best, Britax is the thing. They do not make combo seats, though--the ones that go from 5 point to booster. They do make a plain booster, which is cheaper and smaller than their big 5 points, so if you want to wait a while you could hold out for that.

Our almost 6 yo DS is in a Britax Husky. He is 68 pounds now and had a height spurt recently and is up to about 50 1/2" tall. Three disadvantages to the Husky....it's pricey, it's big, and it is a forward facing only seat.
He still has room to grow...we aren't up the the second to the last harness slat yet (close) and still have one more harness slat to go before he outgrows it height wise. Weight wise it goes to 80 pounds!

We have Owen (3 in December) in a Britax Marathon. It's a wonderful seat, comfortable and safe and plenty of room to grow.

My kiddo got a Cosco Apex for his 3rd birthday. We love it! It was $129 at babies r us- way less than a britax- and it can be used with the harness up to 52" and 65 lbs. and then as a booster up to 57" and 100 lbs (which the britax can't do). Plus it looks like a booster seat more than a carseat, and the harness straps and headrest are easily adjustable. I think it was definitely the best choice for us.

Mandy-Just make sure you're using it in a car w/ headrests, you have to have headrests for that seat.

AJ will be 3 in May and is 37" and 34#? and is newly ffing in a Sunhine Kids Radian.
