When will she wipe herself?

DD has been using the potty on her own for 9 months now. She is 3.9 years old. I don't know how to encourage her to wipe herself. She'll go into the bathroom, turn on the light, and set her potty seat on the toilet, but when it comes time to wipe she'll call for me. Not a problem, I don't mind, I'm just wondering how does a child learn to wipe. When do they usually do a decent job on their own?

good question. I too want to know. My DS is 4 and I still have to wipe him or he won't get clean.

DD does pee herself but I sometimes still have to remind her (And she's been potty trianed since before she was 2) "Did you wipe?" I'll say. and sometimes she says, "Ooops" and heads back in. Poop she does not do and i have heard of kids as old as 5 not wiping poop.

I think dd has always wiped on her own for pee but she still won't wipe her own butt. I've left her there for 45+ minutes hoping she would just get tired of waiting but nope. She has a total melt down when I tell her to do it herself. She's wiped before on rare occasion so I know she can do it.

My DD is 6 and still doesn't wipe on her own. She usually just goes potty and pulls her underwear up

I'm ashamed to admit but dd started wiping herself when I bought those flushable wipes at 4 yrs 1 mos (a friend suggested it after her son started using them at 3.5 yrs). I presented them as a "this is how you do it yourself" gift and she went with the program very happily.

I plan to phase them out at some point, but she feels like she can do a good job with them so for now they stay...

Honestly, the small added expense and environmental badness is offset by no longer having "COME AND WIPE MY BUM!!!" yelled out in the middle of a phone interview or something...

A friend of mine suggested using the P&G wipes that are flushable. Now I know that many of you may not like the idea of flushing those things. But I know with my son he's 4.5yrs old and wouldn't wipe but I found it was more a problem with him not being able to get all that sticky poop off his bottom. He seems to do better with these flushable wipes and I figure sooner or later he'll get the hang of things. We've always had an issue with his wiping. When he was smaller he had trouble because the potty seat actually kept his butt cheeks closed so there was a lot more mess to try and clean up. Since we stopped using that he's done much better with wiping but there are those days where it's like a bad episode of Star Trek and the Clingons! lol

My Dd just turned 5 and is just now starting to wipe herself (at my insistance). I've just got too many butts to take care of now. She's doing ok...I make her wipe 2 or 3 times and then if she wants me to I'll check to make sure she got it all.

Flushable Wipes

I had to pop in and say that flushable wipes are good for all ages! I find that I use much less TP if I use a wipe, and feel much cleaner.
Try them, you'll never go back!

My dd is newly 5, and she doesn't wipe herself. She was wiping her own pee for a while, but regressed when I had a miscarriage 3 months ago. Now she will occasionally wipe pee, but generally waits for me. She has never, ever even considered attempting to wipe her own poop, lol.

She is my only child, so it is really no biggie. She sometimes has to wait for me if I am busy, but at least I know she is clean

Dd (4) has been potty trained for almost 2 years now, and still hasn't expressed any interest in wiping. I always assumed that at some point she would simply want to do it and stop asking me, but maybe I will give those flushable wipes a try!
