natural humidifier?

Does anyone have any suggestions for ways to increase the humidity level in a house/room without using a humidifier? Our home seems so dry this winter. There's a lot more static in the air and my nose is very dry.

Maybe are there any plants you would recommend that are especially useful for this, or any other ideas?

I love running a vaporizer/humidifier in my bedroom at night!

Is there something god-awful about them that I haven't heard?

No, I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with a humidifier, it's just something else to buy and plug in . The only thing I thought might be a problem is if mold grows, but I'm not sure if it's humidifiers are very prone to mold growth or not.

Maybe a humidifier is something worth investing in then?

I dry clothes indoors on drying racks. This is my cheap dryer and cheap humidifier My clothes and diapers hold up better too than going through the drier all the time.

There's the very low-tech method of filling bowls or cups of water and leaving them around the house so they can evaporate. A fish tank might work too (and if you don't have any fish, it will be really easy to clean too!).

I only use vaporizers, and it's because I'm paranoid that with cool-mist humidifiers, I might be effiently culturing and distributing mold spores.

The water in the vaporizer reaches boiling before it leaves, so....

That's my (possibly goofy) rationale, at an rate.

This winter we've really been having trouble with this...or, I'm just noticing it more.

My ideas:

--Plants that like moisture and keep one watering them.
--Drying clothes like mentioned above. (Of course, considering how fast wool socks have dried in my apartment, I'm not sure this isn't like humidifying the Gobi Desert with a canteen.)
--Taking showers with the door open, leave the plug in and leave the used water in the bottom of the bath to evaporate.
--Cooking stuff that makes steam.
--Drinking LOTS of water and tea.
--Dip towels in water and hang to dry when you don't have any laundry drying.

And I still use a hot air humidifier.
