The Lesser of the Evils

Okay, so we all agree that breastmilk is best bar none and the formula companies... :Puke .

But let's say there is a mom trying to adoptive breastfeed with an SNS or a low-supply mom using an SNS. Sadly, since breastmilk from a milk bank is so difficult to get and expensive, and donor breastmilk can't always be completely screened...all in all the process of getting breastmilk is not easy. Formula is much easier. Which formula is considered the best to supplement? Obviously, it's NOT Nestle/Carnation!

Why not homemade formula? There's an excellent recipe on the weston A Price Foundation website.

Also? I've seen organic formula in Whole Foods.

If it were me (and it was at one point), I would use organic formula from Nature's One (Baby's Only). They don't market it as baby formula (but as toddler formula). I would fortify it with omega 3 oils and probiotics.

I didn't know about making my own formula at home, or that's what we would have done when we had to supplement. That is what I would recommend. That way you can ensure high quality ingredients and a balance of nutrition. I wish I had known/thought to ask when we needed to supplement.

Whatever is the healthiest for the baby is the best choice, even if it's Nestle Good Start. If you can afford it, go for the organic stuff, but what matters is the baby's well being, not the company's policies.

Boycotts of companies like Nestle are of their non-formula products, because it's not the formula itself that's bad, but they way they market it. You do whatever is best for your baby, period. If your baby truly needs Nestle Good Start, or whatever, then buy it. Just don't buy Nescafe, etc.

I second that!

I can't BF so I use the Baby's Only organic. It's actually cheaper than Enfamil or Similac. I just ordered a case (12 cans) for $110 total.

In that situation, I'd go organic if at all possible too.

How about Horizon Best (It's either Horizon Best or just Horizon Organic)

It says toddler, but I think there is an infant version, although I had emailed them once and they said they market it as toddler because they encourage breastfeeding until at least toddlerhood.

We used it for our DD when we had to. She seemed to like it and didn't gag at it like she did when we had to use the crap in a can while waiting for the Horizon to come in the mail (we don't have a store here that carries it)
