What do I do?

I havn't been to a dentist since I was a child (I'm 22 now). I know I need to, I just havn't had any real problems with my teeth. I can feel lumps behind my upper back molars, and the left one is sore when I press something (like a toothbrush) onto it. I can't feel anything behind my lower molars.

I guess I'm just worried that any dentist I see will want to automatically pull them, when they might not be causing any real problems. How can I tell if they're causing real problems, and any pain isn't just from them cutting through the gums?

Thanks.
