*Clorox Anywhere Sanitizing Spray*- What's In It?

I have seen a product called Clorox Anywhere Sanitizing Spray advertised. Apparently it kills 99.9% of bacteria and you don't ahve to rinse it. THey showed people spraying it the 'fridge by food and on the highchair tray while the baby was sitting there, etc. The claim is that it is safe to use by kids, food, etc. What is in it???? Is it a natural thing? I have not been able to find it in my grocery store yet to check it myself.

Here is their MSDS. Frustratingly, it doesn't list the chemicals. Isn't that what an MSDS is supposed to do? : At any rate, they say it's non-hazardous but note that it has a "characteristic bleach odor". I'm guessing that it contains a small amount of bleach, but that bleach in tiny amounts is considered non-hazardous for human consumption. Ew.

This epinions review indicates that it's just what I expected, diluted bleach.

I don't see a real need for it. People freak out way too much about bacteria. It's normal, even healthy, to have some bacteria in your environment, we don't need to be wiping them out all the time. I have used bleach approximately ZERO times inside my fridge and I'm not sick or dying from all those icky germs.

If you really want a handy spray-bottle disinfectant, vinegar and water is cheap and effective. I used to have an EPA link comparing bleach, vinegar, and other chemicals for disinfecting and cleaning that showed that vinegar performs as well as bleach. Alas, the EPA changed the link and I can't find it now. But you can still use vinegar with confidence.

Thanks Funshine! Vinegar rules! I pretty much clean everything with it. I also use the vinegar and peroxide thing. I was just curious about the Clorox thing, when I saw the commercial with the lady spraying the highchair while the baby was still sitting there. It just didn't look like a good idea.

I do think it is funny that people will pay $3 for a little spray bottle of diluted bleach.

I totally agree, it is impossible and not helpful to kill all the bacteria in your environment. The immune system, especially the immune system of a young child needs to develop tolerance for a wide range of bacteria.
I also use vinegar and water to wipe things that I want to sanatise, but for most tasks I use soap and water.

From the MSDS:
Personal Protective Equipment: Wear safety glasses. Use rubber or nitrile gloves if in contact liquid, especially for prolonged periods.
Lovely. And it's advertised to be safe to spray near kids??

ETA: Sorry that my quote appeared so weird with the side scroll bar -- is that a product of the upgrade??? Strange!

I saw the commercial for this stuff....gross. That's what I love about vinegar. It costs me $1.89 for a huge jug and I don't have to worry about spraying it near food and on counters.

I really hate anti-bacterial soaps/cleaners. They literally cause the skin to peel off my hands after a few uses! And I've had doctors tell me not to use it either - not just my no-vax, doesn't use antibiotics unless absolutely necessary, breastfeeding encouraging ped, but the on-call ER doctor too. They're very drying to the skin and really actually a bit pointless.

I've held a grudge against this commercial for the last few weeks. I was completely outraged that a mom would spray bleach right in front of her baby. I did the research too and just because the bleach is diluted doesn't make me think its any less hazardous.

However, there are hazards to vinegar too. It makes me crave salt & vinegar chips.

I followed a link to the Clorox site for this product. They're advertising it as safe to use on pacifiers and baby toys without rinsing!!! :

ETA: What I clicked on was actually a banner advertisement through my Hotmail account.

Bleach *is* safe for human consumption in SMALL doses. It can be used to purify contaminated drinking water. You add a tiny amount of bleach to a gallon of water and you're good to go.

Also, bleach evaporates when it dries. So if you spray it on a pacifier and wait till it is dry, the bleach is gone.

I'm not saying I would use it like this, but it isn't going to kill anyone right off.

I agree that bleach is over-used. But there are definitely places where it is a good idea. It has made drinking water safe for millions of people who would otherwise die of cholera and other fun things like that.

I definitely DON'T think it is a good thing to use in our everyday lives, but I'm OK with my daycare provider using it to clean toys etc after a bout of rotavirus swept through her daycare.
