Question about Darling Pocket Fitted Pattern

I am looking for a pattern to make pocket diapers and I thought I'd try the Darling one. But the website says you have to use cover for it!? Can I just make it from PUL on the outside and be done with it instead of using a cover over it?

Also I have the Honey Boy pattern at home - can I make pocket out of that? Do I have to modify it somehow? Has anyone tried?
Inside the brochure it talks about modifing the original pattern to make covers and fitted but not pocket diaper.

these are my patterns so I hope you don't mind if I answer this one...

you *can* use PUL and have a waterproof pocket, but the pattern calls for elastic inside a casing which means you'll need to topstitch. Topstitching through PUL can cause wicking if the PUL isn't treated with DWR like fuzzi bunz are. You can sew the elastic into the seam allowance instead of making a casing for it. (that's what I'd do).

This pattern will teach you how to do casings and has a more rounded shape overall. The AIO pattern would be my personal choice for pockets though. It doesn't have specific pocket directions, but it's not hard to figure out how to turn the pattern into a pocket pattern and it gives better directions for working with PUL (and makes a nicer looking front aplix pocket/AIO than the pocket fitted pattern in my opinion).

I'm not sure if that helped or confused you more but yes.. lots of customers have great sucess using PUL outside for a waterproof pocket.

The DD pocket fitted pattern requires a cover if you make it per the pattern instructions, but ANY pattern can be made into a traditional pocket. I recommend looking at sewdiapers.com for their "extra instructions" for the VB. Yeah, I know, you have a different pattern, but it's all pretty much the same instructions. And they say how to turn their AIO pattern into a pocket. You could do the same with your HB.

Oh, and it looks like in the pictures of the DD pocket fited, it shows a traditional pocket there - looks like pink PUL. I imagine Amber probably has brief instructions at the bottom of the PDF file saying how to do it. I know her training pants pattern has alternate insructions - they're really brief, but if you look at the sites that detail how to do various types of diapers, you'll probably be able to figure it out.
