Canadians - Thyme Maternity/Nestle Contest

Wasn't I terribly disgusted today when I, a newly pregnant mother, was asked if I wanted to fill out a contest form to win a 'dream nursery' for my baby, only to find out that the sponsor was Nestle?

But oh, they're subtle...It doesn't mention that Nestle sponsors the contest anywhere. It just asks for your name, address, phone number, due date (of course), followed by something like:

'Would you like a subscription to the Nestle Baby magazine?' (can't recall the name of it now and don't feel like looking it up... Good Start, is it?) Yes/No

'Would you like to receive coupons for Nestle Good Start products?' Yes/No

And a box that opts you out of receiving anything from Thyme Maternity stores or their affiliates.

So I was going to throw the registration form across the counter and tell them what I thought of their 'contest', but instead signed up for the contest itself, opting out of all the Nestle and Thyme offers. Why? Because I want to see if I'll get coupons or offers from Nestle anyway. I won't sign up for anything else this pregnancy and will wait and see... How much do you want to bet that I'll get some Good Start coupons in the mail come October (when the baby is due)?

Oh, the stink I will make if they do! I'm only seven weeks pregnant and already getting targetted! Disgusting.

I'd be happy to publicize this "partenrship" and generate some emails, by putting this on my Breastfeeding Canada News list (see the link in my signature).

I usually like an web link, or a copy of the original item, so I can be sure to get the information correct. Was the contest on a little pad by the cash register? Could someone get me a copy? I don't live in the city, or go very often, so I can't check it out myself.

Hmmm, did some searching myself. Looks like this relationship is well established:

I can't get throught to the thyme website - Both www.thymematernity.com/ and www.maternity.ca/ should get to Thyme, but I'm getting error messages and my browser crashes.

I gave them some business recently.

The contest is on the site. The sponsors are Kia, Graco and Nestle as far as I can tell.

Perhaps Janice your broswer isn't handling Macromedia Flash well? The entire site is in Flash!

Siana, If you can navigate to the page where the contest is on, post the link here.
Then even if *I* can't open it, I can share the link with my Breastfeeding Canada News list.

So sad.

You may not get anything - I've found that the companies are very good about not sending unsolicited formula and coupons unless requested, unlike in the US.

Wow. The site made my browser crash this time. Great website!

Since it's flash Janice, you can't link directly to the contest page. You'll have to just give the home page link. From there, when you click on the third-last tab (or 8th tab) clearly marked "contest" then you get the form.

I took a picture of it if you're interested in looking it at. I can email it to you.

Thyme also distributes a 'free' magazine to expectant moms that is rife with Nestle ads, I got one when I purchased a shirt while pg. So yes this relationship is well established I will stay away from them in future too.
(fwiw, the magazine itself promoted bf, but with the nestle ads right there it was more than a slight mixed msg, yk?)

How unfortunate that Nestle has Thyme in their back pocket. Thanks for looking into this a little more, Janice and Siana! I'm glad Infact knows about it already. The reason I was unaware of their relationship was because my last baby was born in 2002. Infact Canada shows the relationship from 2003. I was sure I hadn't seen any formula advertising when I was spending money there four years ago...

Jesse, I had no idea about the magazine. That's really too bad. Ugh.

I would like to boycott Thyme from now on. Does anyone know of a more mother/baby-friendly maternity store in Canada (hopefully Ottawa) that sells plus size clothing? I would feel much better spending my money elsewhere.

At risk at being flamed...
I work at Thyme and yes, Nestle is a sponser. However, Thyme also has a new contest to win a free breast pump (one per store) for the month of March. Thyme does do a lot to promote breast feeding.
And as far as the due date information collected, that is for our promotions/sales. We do call our customers to let them know of upcoming sales, and we do not want to call & bother people after they have had their baby.

Yep, I was there recently and saw this. However, it's a Gerber breastpump that they're giving away, is it not? (I'll admit, I didn't look that closely, since I have zero interest in filling out ballots at Thyme for the exact reasons mentioned in this thread, but I'm pretty sure it was a Gerber pump.) Not something I'd personally want to trust my nipples to.

If they were raffling off a quality breastpump, that might be supportive of breastfeeding. But giving away a junky pump that's more likely to frustrate a breastfeeding mom than it is to support her efforts... that's not so helpful, IMHO.

And then when the mom doesn't manage to express a drop with her lousy Gerber breastpump? That's okay, she has a free can of Nestle! Lovely.

Sounds like a well rounded plan all around.

I won't shop at Thyme for just this reason. When I was pregnant with dd1, I filled out a form, and it had all the Nestle sign ups. I selected no- exclusively breastfeeding and I didn't receive anything from Nestle or anyone els.e
