Using a diaper pattern to make a cover?

Hello, all. I just made my first diapers from a pattern that a friend gave me (not sure what kind it is). I'm making newborn and smalls, all flannel fitted diapers. I was wondering how I would modify the pattern in order to make a fleece wrap? Would I use the next size up?

I have some fleece and a couple of wool sweaters that I wanted to use. I was thinking two layers for the cover. Any suggestions appreciated!

Also, do I need a special kind of thread for covers?

I would add a half inch all the way around the diaper pattern to make a cover. For a cover you want to be sure to use 100% polyester or nylon thread, any cotton in the thread can wick moisture. How many layers of fleece or wool would depend on how thick it is. A thick, felted sweater might be fine with 1 layer, if it's a thinner wool or fleece it may need 2.

Using the next size up would probably work. Another option is to trace the fitted pattern 1/2" bigger all the way around.

For thread... You definitely want 100% polyester thread. I recommend Maxilock for a reasonably inexpensive thread. It's serger thread, but you can use it on your sewing machine by sticking it in a mug behind the machine. If you watch for sales, the chain fabric stores put them on sale pretty often. My Hancocks has it regularly for $2.99/cone, and I've seen it as low as $1.77/cone when on sale. Since the cones are 3000 yards, that's a good price!!!

I bought the cheapo Walmart Surelock serger thread cone once, and I threw it away. Everything I sewed with it had broken threads after washing. :
