let's post our BEST ec tricks for new mamas!

ok, here's THE best trick we figured out...it's VERY inexpensive too. we got a few 100% wool blankets from the thrift store (ended up all being military). we got about 10 or 15 flannel pillow cases from the thrift store (less chemical treatment than regular pillow cases and softer/warmer. also had more fun patterns for the babe to look at).

i wash/dried the wool blankets a couple times to fully felt them or get any shrinkage i could. then i cut them to fit the pillow cases. i lanolized them which i now know i didn't even need to do and eventually stopped doing. when our son was a newborn, we folded the wool in 1/2 and put it down in the pillowcase which i then folded in 1/2. newborns don't tend to move around, but can use more absorbancy since alot of pees tend to get missed. also, when you're sleep-deprived and can't even deal with reaching for another pillowcase, or if you just miss part of a poo, the pillow case can be opened and re-folded in 1/2 the other way since the wool isn't really wet. when the babe is older and more wiggly/roly-poly, the wool can be single layer and the pillowcase left unfolded so even with movement, the bed/floor/lap is protected.

if they're just peed on, they can be hung to dry and re-used (since the urine tends to be so dilute) until it gets pooped on or you are doing laundry anyway. i never had a problem with odor. so after laundering, we would get the wool in all the pillowcases and had a nice stack of them ready for use.

sooo easy! and it's so neat to see them needing to be laundered less and less as you get better and better at picking up cues, until you're only washing one or two a week, if that!

oh, and the other great thing we did with these is put them under the babe in bed at night. perfect for letting the babe go dipeless. we had a boy, so we put little undies on him to avoid a fountain hitting the sheets, but it's sooo nice to sleep with your snuggly baby with no undies on either. a leap of faith, but so snuggly.

Thank you for the tricks.... I hope some other EC mamas will add theirs!
I'm here learning :
I find it a good idea to put baby without nappy on a woolen thing. I'm sure it prevents any rashes too.

Zip lock round container for a travel potty! I use the 7 cupper. Also try putting an elastic band around it to identify it and to stop it from slipping when between your knees.

if you are prone to tipping your potty or have dogs or older kids that do this for you try putting a wash clothe or prefold in it for the afternoon. It will soak up lots of little pees over the day!

Make your own potty pants out of cotton sweat pants. I cut them up the crotch and thru the waist . . . then I overlap the waist band and resew. I use a zipper stitch on the cut edges . . . 10 minutes

Great thread! sprinkle pocket....AWESOME idea! Those wool bed protectors are so expensive and your idea is so so simple and I am sure effective. I am going hunting for Army blankets. When DD was wetting the bed, I always hated those plastic bed pad bc they would make you sweat like crazy and were just plain uncomfortable. What a great idea. I will be using this idea for DS for sure! Thank you so much for sharing.

I wish I had a great EC trick to add. I'll have to think about it and post back. Just wanted to say your idea was really a good one.

I got this tip from another site, but I haven't tried it yet. The poster suggested that the potty be lined with a coffee filter for easier clean up. I thought this was an excellent tip for EC on the go. I can't wait to try it, but I'm a nerd like that.

i dunno if this is a 'trick' but the best thing that worked for us was going at the same time. i would just go tot he bathroom and take her with me or if i thought she needed to go i would also go and use the toilet. this was a GREAT technique to use while out of the house too. we could always use the potty together, i didnt have to worry about where to put her when i needed to go since she could just sit on her bblp and she nearly always went, ensuring we were good for another hour or two.

Hopefully no one thinks my "trick" is too gross...

Both of my babies so far have had lots of little tiny poos through the day until around 6-8 months of age. Often it seems that baby will have what I call a "productive fart", just some gas with a bit of yellow bfed poo that escapes with it. Besides the mini-poo, many times we have a dry diaper for 12+ hours, so it seems like a waste to wash a whole prefold, fitted, or AIO just for that tiny dot of soil (usually the "real" big poos went in the potty). So I started refolding the prefold and placing the new clean surface towards baby. Sometimes I could even refold the diaper 6 times before needing a new one. Another thing I do is to line fitteds or AIOs with a wipe. That way the little bit of poo goes on the wipe and I can just launder that, not the whole dipe.

such wonderful tips! I'm so excited to find this thread because we're expecting and I plan to EC from day one!

love love love sprinkle pockets ideas for the wool liner!!!
I, for one, don't think your idea, BinahYeteirah, was gross.

thank you all for sharing.

this sounds liek a great idea. wish i'd known about it when we were ec'ing. out of curiosity -do you just insert the wool int he pilowcases, not stitch it inside? then when washing do you put BOTH the wool and the pillowcases in the washing machine? or only the pilowcases/ how do you wash the wool?

Do you think it would work with a pre-fold on a Baby rug lambskin? I have one which is beautiful, really comfty and soft and as it's wool, it's breathable, cool in summer, warm in winter....

Because apparently, the wool blanket you put under the pillowcase doesn't really get wet, does it?

It's just that I don't want to ruin the lambskin!! (More expensive than a Salvation army blanket )

I would like to have my baby in the bad and I thought it's really great not to use a mattress protector for the whole bed because it's not really breathable.

Btw, I've bought the lambskin for baby massage.

Lastly, you EC mamas have really helped me! Without you, I wouldn't EC my baby from birth My mother was pretty crunchy but she never heard of it! My husband seems motivated when I told him EC = less diapers, less laundry!! But the main point is EC is a way to respect baby.

I don't know about a lambskin, but I have a snugglewool lamb fleece that I use with a prefold + flannel receiving blanket - and we have never washed it yet in 3 months of constant use!

These are such great tips! My only real trick now is to use elastic fleece belts. with a loincloth prefold - so easy to flip in and out. I made a belt on my own - it was really easy to make.

This isn't a trick with bedding or anything, but it was the best thing I discovered ECing this time around.

Always offer the potty first, unless you are absolutely sure that something else is needed. For the most part, most everything else (hunger, sleep, gas, etc) can wait for a minute without dire consequenses, but pee can't be held for that long and offering comfort for those other things often causes the babe to release their bladder anyway. It really helped so much in the early months. I still find myself offering nursing to my fussy toddler only to get peed on moments later so I am trying to get back into that groove of offering the potty first.

The lambskin gets completely clean, even bf poo. We used Kookaburra woolwash.

As for pee, we just air it dry.

Not really a trick per se, but we've always tried to change up where and how we offer the potty, so he doesn't get totally accustomed to just one thing. He'll go on any big potty in the public restrooms, a kids potty, a potty seat, etc. Even standing up in the tub! At home we use the flip/flush potty reducer seat.

Here's mine... if you think your babe had to pee, but she's on the potty and not peeing, sucking on a pacifier or your finger might help her to relax and let go - this worked a lot with my dd when she was younger. Also, for a few months, same thing where I know she has to go but isn't going, after she's been sitting on the potty for a few moments, standing her up and then putting her back down on the potty seems to make her go instantly! I don't know why, maybe the movement of sitting back down puts pressure on her bladder and reminds her she needs to pee?

Really liked the coffee filter clean-up tip! A great idea for poops but I don't know if I'll ever get around to using it.

BinahYeteirah - we do that sometimes too!

Just thought I'd describe how we did potty trips when DD was a newborn. The potty was on the changing table and she was always diapered between potty trips. We would undo the diaper and clean her up (usually had missed something.) then move her onto the BB little potty with her back supported by parents body and arms. Signal her and she would usually go. Then while she's sitting there move used diaper and position clean prefold with a cloth wipe as "landing pad". When we moved her back, we aimed the poopy butt at the landing pad and could wipe her clean on her back then still have a clean diaper to wrap her up in.

When she could stand holding on to something, we switched to having her stand at the tub for being wiped.

Best ec tip for new moms.....don't give up! It does pay off but sometimes after lots of trial and error. But it's so worth it to keep up it!!
what an excellent thread!

we used to have a surprisingly long toilet, so i could sit on it with the baby seated in front of me.

when i am taking my little babe to the potty, i might ask, do you need to use the potty? signing it. then i say, just a mo--ooo-ment. this is my 'hold it' cue, and she can really do it!

if we wear sleepers, we like the kind with snaps all round the legs . we leave them open except at the ankles - then they are like chinese potty pants.

follow the links in my post about wool, it will answer your question about the lamb/sheepskin or wool blankets, how wool works.

Great thread!! Thanx everyone for sharing tips! Could this be made into a sticky so new users (like myself) could see right away? Also, new tricks could be posted as moms find something new that works. There are lots of great ideas here for anyone new to ec, but it's kinda getting buried, I only found it 'cause I'm trying to read all of this before baby is born, kinda a way to gain experience without having any.

We employ the lower back tickle to get a tinkle if she's been sitting long but not produced anything. Like other tricks above, I think it's related to relaxation.
