AIO's: rolling the PUL in

Okay, I know you're supposed to sew the elastic to the seam allowance on the PUL side, and the PUL is cut a little wider than the inner fabric. But I have one diaper here (from sunkissed*babies on eBay, unfortunately her website is down and nothing comes up on an eBay search for her right now, so I can't show pics) that rolls in exceptionally well. It is so perfect. It even looks great. I'm wondering if there is a special trick to do this. The VB AIO's I have don't roll in nearly this well. (In fact, I even sewed a casing on one of them to help it because it wouldn't roll in at all.)

I am so tempted to take this diaper apart to see what she did. Do you think the PUL is just cut exceptionally larger than the inner fabric? I can feel the elastic in there and I'm sure it's just 1/4 inch. I'm wondering if there's something special, like maybe she folded it over after sewing the elastic in (but before turning) and sewed it down again. It does feel kind of stiff, so something like that is a possibility. If it would work. I might just have to play around with the idea a bit.

Added Pics

Okay, I took some pictures of the diaper I was talking about--from Sunkissed Babies--where the PUL rolls in so well and I'm wonderng how they sewed the elastic.

Am I crazy, or are all my other diapers just sewn really badly (by WHAMs?!), or does this look way better than most diapers? I love the way it gathers so nicely. And the PUL just rolls right in. How do I copy that?

And thanks, StrawHatBrat, I actually posted a reply to you yesterday but I see that it didn't go through. I hope mdc gets back in shape soon! It is driving me crazy. Anyway, I don't think this was done the same way. I'm pretty sure the elastic is sewn all the way down. And the PUL doesn't roll in as much as your fleece does--it just turns in easily.

Okay, it almost looks like instead of doing a straight stitch to attach the pieces together they did a zig-zag, maybe tacking down the elastic at the same time? Is this even possible? I'm not sure about the rolling in, but the gathers are *very* even.

What I think they do is probably zigzag(3step) ONTO the seam allowance. ?? And I think if you cut the inner fabric smaller it should always roll in.
I could be totally wrong.

Okay, so instead of sewing the fabrics together (straight stitch) first, and then zigzagging the elastic on, she probably just zigzagged the elastic on without the 2 sides being sewn together at all? That does look very possible. Or maybe you could do a straight stitch right next to the edge of the fabric just to keep the two pieces together before sewing the elastic on. But I guess the idea would be to make sure that the elastic/zigzag stitch is the closest stitch to the inside of the diaper (before it's turned) so it is the only one you really "see" on the outside. That sounds easy enough.

Has anyone done this?

I'm not sure how she does it, but I noticed that on my DD Potty Dance Pants and on my own pattern - both of which have the PUL alot bigger than the inner, compared to a VB AIO - the legs roll in alot better than the VBs do. So I think a big part of it is just cutting the PUL even bigger, and also making sure the PUL is bigger along the entire length of the leg. I think the VB AIO extension lines go back to the pattern too quickly.

Yup, inside is smaller then outside and the elastic is sewn or serged to the seam alowance on the outside side Or I should say that's what I do It looks like that, here is the same idea (but same size inner as outer) on one of my one-sized covers I make:

One

Two

Three

Sunkissed babies is the ONLY WAHM made fitted I LOVE I could ahve a whole stash of her fitteds I ahve 6 of her flannel fitteds They are the best!
Anyway hadto say that about her since she wasmentioned here

Rolled out in a pocket helps keep fleece next to the baby skin With a fitted it doesn't make a difference really!
