I saw one of those creepy bottle things in use!

And it really creeped me out! They're even worse to see IRL than on the internet.

I was picking out fabric for a quilt I'm making, and I had DS nursing quietly in the sling. Then a lady rolls her shopping cart by and I see that she's got her little baby (maybe about 6 -7 weeks) in the bucket propped in the cart with a bottle feeder hanging down from the bucket's handle. The baby started sputtering, and then turned its head from the bottle and the mom stuck the bottle back in the babe's mouth and went on with her business.

I don't know, but those are not good devices.

Ugh! I hate those things! They grow up and can feed themselves so fast, so ppl should enjoy that helpless time while they can

It's so hard for me to see that. Mostly because I know DS is my baby and the times I get to cuddle a "true" baby (versus my 4.5 year old whirlwind) are few and far between.

well, I suppose we can be glad the baby was at least facing her in its bucket

I actually heard of a good use of one of those kind of things recently! Not that one exactly, but this one:

Anyway, my nephew (14 months now) who has leukemia, has been dangerously underweight. He's been bf'd this whole time (yay, my SIL!) but they can't get him to eat any food really- probably because he feels like crap all the time. He won't take a normal bottle, but he will take a high-calorie shake in this thing (also in an SNS). They've got him to gain several pounds now and are very happy. So, yay!

Anyway, I was just so shocked to hear a decent reason for such a thing to exist at all that I wanted to share.

They're probably also good for high-order multiples- what do you do if you have 3 or 4 newborns to feed and only 2 breasts?

This woman was obviously misusing the product, and I have a feeling that most users abuse it in a similar way.

It's funny. I was taught a lesson in "dan l'kaf zechus" which in Hebrew is basically a way of saying to "judge favorably" another person.

I was at synagogue a few weeks ago on Shabbat. I came downstairs to nurse my 6 month old who was starting to make a racket in services. There was a mom there with twin baby girls in a double stroller sucking on those bottle things with the nipple in the mouth and a long tube going to the bottle (don't know what it's called). I thought to myself, "sigh, how sad, no nursing."

We started chatting, and I was nursing, and she asked how long my kids nurse(d). I told her and mentioned I am a volunteer for an organization that helps moms breastfeed thru mom-to-mom contact, etc. She said, "oh, great, can I call you tonight? I'm exclusively nursing and pumping for these babies and I need to build up my supply."

:

Thank goodness I hadn't said anything. We talked for a while about marathon feeding sessions and building supply, and she came to the last meeting.

You just NEVER KNOW!

sick - if you are too bz to feed your baby then don't get pregnant! I guess they could be useful for multiples maybe.

And only two hands, too. I definitely think for HOM, or evens twins sometimes they would be an absolute godsend.

Also, a mother with a disability which means she can't hold a bottle (and acan't BF) would find them useful.

As a mother of twins, I will say that the more I think about it, the more useful it would seem when both babies are hungry and screaming. I don't nurse (long story) and I don't have the bottle thing thats in the link, but it might come in handy sometime when I am busy with one girl. Although I can see how these would be abused in many situations.

Nicole / My3Kids'Mama,
Thanks for putting a name to a concept I first learned about in an advice column years ago (probably Ann Landers or Dear Abby which would make sense I now know it it seems to have a Hebrew origin). Too bad I'll never be able to pronounce it, much less spell it.

As I understood it, the idea is to attribute the best motive, especially when it doesn't cost you anything. I can't say I apply that perfectly in my life but I do try to bring myself up short with it when I am being more judgmental than usual.

This product is probably a good example, whatever the manufacturer's intended market is it sounds like their are a lot of AP parents that can put it to good purpose, maybe even the intended purpose on occasion if it doesn't become a complete substitute for feeding and cuddling a baby at the same time.

The one that scares me is in their own AD they are advocating it for use in the vehicle. Everything I have read since before #1 was born is that you NEED to be watching your child while they are eating. How can you keep them from choking while driving? I can see rare instances where it may help but unfortunately "one bad apple" can really spoil the whole batch.
