I am trying to wade through all the information but I am so confused what is PUL? I am trying to make some simple diaper covers for a baby to be (the mom will be using a diaper service) Can I just use velcro? What are aplix/touchtape? Do I have to use snaps? What should I use to make sure it is water proof- I was just hoping to hit the local fabric store and not have to order anything off the internet. Help! Thank you!!!

PUL is a laminated fabric that is completely waterproof but it's only available online.

You can use a hook & loop but not 'Velcro' brand or any local store brand. I can tell you from experience that it doesn't hold up to the rough use of diaper wear and washing. the hooks will break off and then the thing is useless. You really need to order Aplix or Touchtape online. It's cheap!

You don't need to use snaps but if you do then you need to apply them with a snap press ($$$). You can send them out for someone to apply the snaps, check the sticky at the top for snap services. Don't waste your time with the fabric store pound-in snaps, they won't last.

Waterproof - PUL works but so do fleece and wool. Search for 'fleece' here and you will get tons of info regarding types and the number of layers you need. Local leece is just fine. Wool can be purchased yardage or knit/crochet.

HTH!

I've also heard of people using goretex and other outerwear fabric from Joanns with success. I don't know about their stretchy-ness though. I don't know if you can get goretex from Joanns, but some sort of outerwear fabric that's waterproof. I would still recommend pul or fleece- haven't used wool yet, but its been used for years and years!
