I sent that lady an email. I had to. You know, the one who sent me into non caring land?
Well he has already been done. He's... 4 or 5 days old now I think. Anyway, she told me...

That she studied NOHARMM and Jews Against Circumcision and the AAP before doing it. She knows there are no medical benefits.

She did it because she's not 'really' Jewish and wants to give him entrance to 'the tribe' (her quotes). She did it because millions of jews were gassed in the holocaust and making him sacrifice part of his body is the right thing to do, to honor their deaths.

She always planned on doing it (even though she admits that it's not a good thing to do to a child), she just didn't know how they wanted to. They decided to do it in the hospital by an OB. "He's such a gentle man" she says. Uh huh, sure. Anyway, that whole "religious rite" she was so concerned about was done by an OB to avenge the murder of millions of his ancestors. She said it was the right thing to do because THEY didn't get to have THEIR brit milahs. But he's not having one anyway... just a random old hospital circ. And they do not practive judaism at all but since they might want to practice it one day, they felt the need to do it to him in case they decided it was the right religion for them. She said that she was proud that he was branded as a jew and that he will be proud one day as well. Then she compared circ to slavery.

I know we can't talk religion here but I really don't think that I am. Because there was nothing religious about any of this.

I'm out of non caring world. I'm into going postal on random internet strangers world.

I don't know which is worse. :

Branded? By a hospital circ? The only thing he was "branded" with is the medical quackery that started the American circumcision craze promoted by Harvey Kellogg and the like. Poor kid.

Beliefs should be shared lovingly with children, not carved into their flesh.

As an Orthodox Jew I find that preposterous! According to Halacha, the child isn't even Jewish! If he chooses to convert to Judaism some day, he'll still need to have a Bris! (though he'd only need a drop of blood taken from the penis for a Halachic Bris following hospital circ.)

I'm not trying to derail this thread- just pointing out that, even from a Jewish perspective, this particular circ is meaningless!

This woman sounds like about a million other ignoramuses out there that continue to do this to their children because they WANT to. It only takes them the silliest of reasons to justify it. And this is one of the worst I've ever heard.

Sorry, I felt like going a little postal tonight too.

A friend of mine tried to pull that kind of line (her son is still incubating.) Because her Mom's family USED TO BE jewish! They aren't anymore. I told her that that was a decision she should let the kid make when its time!

For Orthodox Judaism, but I think Reform, Conservative, maybe others are more lax about this requirement.... a hospital circumcision is okay.

As an interfaith partner, I felt the bris shalom honoured the tradition of the ritual without the cutting... and gave our family an alternative.

I hope that one day this type of peaceful ceremony will be more accepted so that women like Estelle's friend will know of it and consider it.

I've said this before, I'm sure I'll say it again:

Own your decision. Stand up and tell us WHY you did it! You did it because you are selfish, self-serving, and for some reason think that a child's body belongs to his parents, the way an automobile or pair of jeans do.

He's my child, I own him. I own his body. I own his penis. It's my penis. If I want to chop off part of it, that's my choice. It's not going to be his penis until he's an adult, and I want him to always think of the fact that I owned it at one time.
I don't care what's right for him, I don't care what's best for him. I only care about my preferences. I will cut off any part of his body I want, his choices, his rights, his body be damned.
I don't need a rationale, I don't need to explain it. IT'S MY BODY.

I can have an abortion if I want to, because it's my body, my rights. But he can't choose what happens to his body, because his body is mine, my rights.

How's this Nay? :Puke:Puke:Puke

That woman sounds incredibly confused. If she were so adamant about doing this because of religion, then why didn't she have the religious circ.? Do people actually read what they type before they send e-mail or hit post? Geesh, this woman is a contradiction to herself.
