Decision should belong to owner
TORA SPIGNER . via Web site

As a registered nurse working in a large metropolitan hospital in the San Francisco Bay area, I have been a vocal opponent of infant circumcision for over 10 years. I work as a labor and delivery nurse and proudly wear a "No Circumcision" sticker on my name badge, providing information for birthing families about the unnecessary harm of routine infant circumcision. I am proud to say that I have had numerous families change their minds because they never even knew the function of the foreskin, the barbarism of the procedure itself (often done with no anesthetic or pain management) and the rights of the child. So if your son, at the age of adulthood, decides he wants his foreskin removed, he can have it done. Otherwise, it should be no one else's decision.

The original anti-RIC column, entitled "My view by Andrew Tavani: The big business of circumcision" which ran in the worldwide newspaper "Metro" appeared on March 1, 2006.

The nurses are starting to tell the truth. That will bring the whole thing down like a house of cards. Kudos to the brave nurses who have spoken up and held the line for years and years against circ. More and more nurses are speaking out against circ every year and following their professional mandate to advocate for the patient.

Another letter to the ed.

Would we start tradition today?

Regarding “The big business of circumcision” (March 1): As a man who was
circumcised almost 28 years ago during a bris (a Jewish ritual circumcision)
when I was 8 days old, I can relate to Andrew Tavani’s feelings of having
had something stolen from him without his consent. What other part of the
body can a parent consent to amputate for supposedly preventative reasons?
And what part of a baby girl’s genitals is acceptable to amputate?

If circumcision didn’t already exist, and someone started trying to push the
idea of amputating part of a baby’s genitals for any reason, do you think we
would accept such a thing today? Greg Dervin
