Flushable diapers!

I just heard about these new flushable diapers called Gdiapers:

Has anyone heard anything about them? They claim to be a lot more enviro-friendly than sposies and seem like they might be a good alternative to cloth for apartment-dwellers like me. If they are what they claim to be, I'll be excited.

WOW! How cool! (now that I've bought my cloth stash...) They might be nice for going on trips, or for being out all day, don't you think?

WOW! These sound great! I would love to try them! And the price for the refills, cheaper than sposies at most stores! And what a great alternative for those (like CityKid) who live in apartments, or those (like myself) who live with in-laws who don't understand cloth and make it tough to use them!!

There have been several threads about these in Diapering. Do a search.
Personally I don't think they sound any better than sposies. They still use the same gel bead stuff. And flushing them? I actually lokked at the website. It seems like a lot of BS to me.

Definitely do a search on the Diapering board. Personally, I never flushed tampons (back when I used them, before my Diva Cup days, LOL) because they always plugged up the pipes--I can't imagine flushing a whole diaper!!

Ready? Here's my rant...

They are NOT what they advertise. They take AT LEAST two flushes to get down the toilet. You have to rip them apart in order to get them to go down(just what you want to do with a poopy diaper right?), they include a stick to further break up the diaper in the toilet. If you have old plumbing - bad idea. I have heard numerous stories of them clogging toilets/sewer lines - requiring a plumber visit.

And then, they are bleached, with peroxide, not chlorine. And they have the same gel that sposies have in them. They advertise that you can compost them -but so did sposies when they first came out They had to remove that claim.

Personally - go with cloth. You still have to wash covers with these, and they don't actually save water - someone did a comparison on the Diapering board. People keep saying they are better than disposable - but they ARE disposable. And truthfully - I am not sure what flushing all that super absorbent gel down your toilet is gonna do in the long run. Seems like a bad thing to introduce into the water supply in that way.

They may have their place...but it won't be in my house.

CityKid, you are have a few great diaper services in your area. All you have to do it toss the dirty prefold into your bin, poop and all. And they will pick them up just like that. And if you use wool covers you can handwash in the sink and never look at a washer or dryer.

I live in Manhattan, and I used cloth diapers. I have a washer and dryer in my building so it has not really been a problem for us. It was only 1-2 extra loads a week. My son is PLed now so I no longer have to do the wash.

PM if you want any more info on diaper services, lots of moms in your area use them and could offer opinions and preferences depending on your neighborhood and budget.

Honestly, I doubt that it will catch on. For people who use sposies, it's alot more trouble. For people who use cloth, why go back to a more unatural product?

I love my fluff so much . I love putting soft cotton against my baby's skin instead of polyacrylate gel beads.

I posted about these a few months ago.... and was pointed in the direction of the diapering board, where they basically got dissed.... they are $$$$$..... but if you are interested, our Whole Foods (in Bellevue, WA) is now carying them! It's like $28 for the starter pack, which includes 10 dipes. I think if they can improve and get cheaper, this might be the wave of the future.... fingers crossed any way. My toilets could never cope now.... they can barely deal with preggie poop, if you know what I mean....

i didnt read all the way through it though.. we've always just used cloth and love cloth so i would never think of switching. i did use sposies 11 years ago on my son and i hated all those gel things! too bad i didnt know back then how easy (and affordable!) cloth is.

Well, some children are *extremely* heavy wetters; as in, an 8-layer hemp fitted is, on it's own, about as effective as tying a sock around the baby's waist. Given the choice between something like this and Huggies Overnights for nighttime and errands, I'd have to consider this very, very strongly for BooBah. They'd be cheaper, and since we're using cloth during the day anyway, washing the covers wouldn't be a huge deal.

They had something similar to these when my oldest was a baby but with more options. there was a very similar cloth cover, and then you could choose between disposable inserts or cloth inserts. they didn't really go anywhere. but at least, unike these, you had the option of either/or with the same covers.

and this seems like a whole lot of money (holy cow they are spendy!! I never paid that much for disposables, even name brand) and effort for disposable diapers. and you would need a lot of covers. Since the diaper doesn't fan out poop is likely to hit it often. I wonder how absorbant they really are . . . and really how are these any different than huggies? because you can flush them? in a land fill or in the sewer treatment plant whats the difference. It is not like it magically dissapears. they are stil being deposited somewhere.

and as owners of an apartment I would have serious issues with my tennant flushing these. they look like they are just asking for a sewage back up.
