This one is the worst reason ever

On another board that had a circ thread a women described how she researched the circ issue and decided to leave her son intact. However after she took him home she became upset at how his intact penis looked so after a couple of days she and her Dh took him in to get circed. She then stated it was the right decision for them.

Yeah, cause she's going to have sex with it so it matters what it looks like.

Especially since I have seen newborns with both and I can't understand how you could think that a mutilated penis is better looking.

Where do these superficially stupid people come from??!! Does she even have a clue that an intact one looks about the same as a mutilated one when erect...minus the scarring, skin bridges, discoloration, odd curves, hair and scrotum up the shaft, etc.???!!! Or maybe those are the features that make them "pretty." :

My attitude is there nothing wrong with having personal preferences but I do not like it when those preferences are carved into someone elses flesh. It's too bad that her DH was not pro-intact.If I was her husband I would have told her to get over it.

I find these circumcision arguments so bizarre - I'm from the UK, and pretty much no one here is circumcised, it's something like 4% of the population, and only for religious reasons. I've never even seen a circumcised penis!

Let me just clarify that I was referring to of the just circed penis still recovering, etc.

You know, I had very little experience with intact penises when my son was born. We decided that it wasn't our decision or our penis, so we left him alone. It took a little while for the view of his penis to erase what my mind thought of as a "normal" penis. But now, if I see a little boy who has been cut, it certainly looks abnormal and weird to me. It makes me so sad cause if this mother had just given it more time, it would have looked like a perfectly normal penis and she would have later thought that circumcised ones were the odd ducks. It is also sad because it shouldn't be her preferences that matter.

I think she is full of bull plop.

That might be the reason she gave but its not the real reason. She probably caved to the pressure of whats "normal". Sure an intact penis looks different but not that different. It probably has more to do with what her family or friends thought.

I agree completely. DH and I had never seen and intact penis before our twin sons were born, and while I confess they looked odd to us at first, it NEVER occured to us that we should have their foreskins cut off. We weren't even strongly anti-circ at the time - our decision was based more on "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", and "that's GOT to HURT!".

Within a few days we were both completely used to what they looked like - and marvelled at what an amazing bit of anatomy the foreskin is!

I'm trying to picture a loving parents oohing and aahing over their precious baby: "Such delicate little fingers! What adorable little toes! Watch how he stretches his legs, then draws them up again. Oh, he's got hold of my finger! What a grip! Wait - don't take his diaper off - I don't want to see that creepy thing on the end of his penis!"

Yeah, right.

I once attended the home birth of a boy who had a cleft palate and lip. He was born in the water and the mother "caught" him herself. As she brought him up to her heart she said "Oh, I think he has a little cleft palate." She adored him and all the birth attendants were struck by his beauty and amazing aura. The father was phoning everyone and announcing the miracle of his son's birth within minutes.

The mother told me many weeks later. . "You know, babies with intact lips and palates are boring." They had the repair done so that he could eat better but there was never any doubt in their minds that he was the perfect baby.

I think that parents who have an attachment experience of birth ---their own surroundings, darkness, warmth, privacy, respect, immediate skin contact, etc.-- would love and protect whatever they birth. That's how society perpetrates circumcision. Separate the newborn from the parents and undermine the parents' natural "knowing".

Doctor Michel Odent's hospital in Pithiviers, France gave a handout to parents that said "Don't listen to any of the professionals."

Normally, I would agree with you, but there are several mothers on here that have had homebirths and still go on and circ their boys.
Yes, I get your point Kathryn. I'm always shocked to hear that homebirth parents are going in for a circ on their gently born boy. Even that some midwives encourage or perform the circ. I guess we have to look further to find
the reason why mothers over ride their gut feelings. The posts on the "Regret" sticky are enough to break your heart.

Good reminder that we've got a lot of work to do. Baybee

I think a lot of it is that women are programmed by society to be little minions that do what the men tell them. They are taught by their mothers and by TV shows and movies that the good wife and mother is the one that cooks and cleans and treats her man like a god. So, having been brainwashed to believe all of that, when it comes down to it and a higher person than her, whether it is a doctor, her parents, or her husband, she submits like a "good girl" would. Same reasoning goes for the "everyone else does it" argument. Girls are taught that to be popular and liked, you have to have the good, trendy clothing, the correct hair style, the right makeup for that time, etc... If you don't have this stuff, you probably won't be popular.

Oh good God!: Cause I'm sure it looked SO much better all bloodied and raw after she had him mutilated. :Puke
On a side note,I think penises look weird regardless, intact or circed.:
