I've been off the forums (fora? lol) for awhile but am back, at least periodically....

We're very unschooly over here...no structured anything so far. DD has started to get more into spelling things, mostly people's names. I got a set of 6 big (4 inch sides?) foam cubes that have letters on them and they are played with every day. The only problem is that she can't spell her own name because there aren't enough of the correct letters! She also wants to spell things backwards, or just put all the letters together any which way ... she doesn't really understand yet that the letters have to go together in a certain way. She can spell her little sister's name though. It's fascinating to watch.

She's figuring out categories too, and that things have multiple names...yesterday we went through a long list of things that were animals (cats, dogs, snakes, etc), and the other day it was fruit.

Still very into cooking...the other morning we were making pancakes (she was stirring) and she looked at me and said "Mom, I think we need half a cup of heavy cream." i about fell over laughing. I think I could keep her busy all day with some flour, water, food coloring and assorted things in shake-top jars (like spices).

Also very intense and dramatic...just wears me out some days. I try not to quash it though, since both her dad and I are not what I'd call emotionally expressive.

The baby has learned how to wave and kiss, and I'm pretty sure she can say "hi". She is intent on eating our cat. He's not bright enough to stay away, so she might do it one day.

Anyone else doing story stretchers? Today we read the Aesop's fable The Crow and the Pitcher- the one where the crow puts rocks in the pitcher until it can reach the water inside. We then took a small measureing cup and added water, then rocks to see how the water level rose. A nice basic science experiment in my mind.

Anyone else got any ideas to share?

Yesterday we went to the childrens museum in Seattle. It was a blast. Arthur always goes thru the museum at breeak neck speed. We were there for over 4 hours and didn't even nearly do everything. This time we went into the recording studio there and played on the instruments there. loads of fun. Arthur sang on a microphone. But as we were driving home, I was thinking, about everything we did and trying to figure out besides the recording studio which was something new, although we have played all the instruments before, what exactly was Arthur learning during this visit? I am sure there was learning going on, but sometimes it is kind of hard for me to see it from so close and then suddenly I will see it as a giant leap that has occurred later on. But I wonder after a hectic day like yesterday, what exactly we all got out of it besides the fun and for Arthur a great nap on the way home. Why doesn't he ever come with labels that glow over his head saying "learning XYZ right now" or "creating R-Tsynapses which are necessary for this...." so I know what we are doing is worth all the chaos of a trip into Seattle during spring break? (OK we had to go into the city anyway and decided to add on the trip to the museum since we were burning the gas anyway) ...
Do you all ever wish someone could point out to you where the learning is taking place in certain days?

The kids played with their guinea pigs this morning then we went to an art class where we painted and played with other kids...we went grocery shopping...played outside with sand & water...ate lunch together and now one is napping and the other is playing quietly in her room. I'm about to go spend some time with her. We may do startfall.com, read some books, do a little of the singapore math, or just play. She likes to act out stories...she's a good "director" she tells me what to play, what to do & how to do it!
We might make biscuits later with a couple of other kids...or just play outside.

Can I jump in? I have a 2 1/2 year old who is going to be joining her big sister, who is now 5 1/2 and going to be homeschooled after this year (she's in kindergarten now in a private religious school and is having a pretty good year).

Bringing dd1 home for a number of reasons, mainly the outrageous length of the school day in the religious school system we use (7 hours), the cost of the school, and that I MISS HER and want her here. :

2 1/2 year old dd is learning by absorption, seemingly. that and the learning leapfrog fridge phonics thing she loves (do you hear "the b says buh the b says buh, every letter makes a sound the b says buh" in your sleep?!! I do). She loves to color, play make believe with her dolls, little people, etc., cook in her play kitchen, roll and bounce balls, and could literally spend hours in the kitchen sink if I let her. Lately, due to an unfortunate family situation (terminally ill MIL is living with us) she has watched too much Noggin, which we never had before -- MIL asked us to get cable because she can't read any more, so we did; we HATE it but can't very well take it out now. Sigh.

Sorry for the ramble. Just chiming in.

We made blueberry muffins this morning and DD asked why the batter was green (we had to use frozen bbs). I explained about blue juice and yellow(ish) batter, and we got out the food coloring and did some color mixing.

In the middle of it I thought hey, this could be considered homeschooling...but I just thought it was cool to be able to show her how to make different colors.



also out of the blue this morning she said "we're going to mix the batter....mmmmmmmix starts with M!" We had that fridge phonics thing up when she was much younger but it drove us nuts so we took it down...but apparently she's still soaking up the concepts from somewhere.

Wonderful idea, and I have to say, my daughter just LOVES Aesop Fables (and any for that matter)! She would love this idea.

My ds refuses to use the "chubby" pencils,crayons, and markers. He likes to use little "golf" pencils, and regular crayons and markers. Developmentally, does this *really* make a big deal. He's not really into writing, but will a few times a week *write* something or draw something as dd is doing her schooling.

Any thoughts??

When I was a child, I found fat pencils and such annoying. Seems to me a little pencil would just fit his little hand better and feel more comfortable. Lillian

The pencil being chubby has no relation that I know of to developing writing. Actually, using a little golf pencil should force him to grasp the pencil in a more "proper" manner for writing later on.

DS is really getting into sounding things out, and last night while we read stories he sounded out most of the two-letter words and is finally starting to "get" how the letters become a word. It's pretty cool to watch. I think soon the 3 letter words might finally make sense to him.

Our caterpillars came the other day, so we are having fun watching them grow (and they have grown in just 2 days, it's amazing!). I can't wait for them to spin their chrysalides and become butterflies!!! We wound up ordering from insectlore.com -- great store with lots of other science stuff as well. DS wants to order everything, all the bugs, etc. In fact, last night we were reading a story and there were pigs in it, and he said he wanted to order pigs next. : He said they could live in a jar!!!

I want to see that pig in a jar! too cute!

I have had a great time at the dollar store lately- last week we got fridge letters, and beads to string, and today I got a recorder, marbles for fine motor games, a magnifying glass, and a cheapo computer game. Yea, its not the best ever game- but it cost $1. I love when I find cool thing for our homeschool shelf at just my price.

Today we've done fine motor stuff- putting clothes pins around the top of a bag, moving marbles with toast tongs, and then later weighing marbles in our balance.

I've read that the regular-diameter short pencils are actually better for beginning writers than the chubby ones. I wish I could remember where.

BeanBean's been doing and saying all kinds of fun things, despite the fact that I have been.. well, a pudding. I feel guilty, because I know that he could be making more progress if I was willing/able to help him when he asked for it, but I'm just happy to see that he's not moving backwards.

I recall it being discussed in the gifted threads, or in our yahoo group, Rynna. One of the two I believe. I could be wrong, but I know I've read it too, in close proximity to this site.

If I'm not mistaken, it helps them to gain better control and forces them to use proper grip since there isn't too much utensil to work with (they can't place their hand farther up the pencil, for instance).

We finally told DH's parents we were homeschooling. They were very understanding and seemed to almost of expected it. Where they're so heavy into public school system, I was scared they would protest. I explained how I felt DS would be bored and would benefit from homeschooling (I was like him as a kid and was so bored in school. I used to finish my work early and have to sit and do nothing while everyone worked). So that's quite a relief. I'm not too concerned about what my family thinks. They think everything I do is weird.

I am making a list of things I want to order when we get our "choice in child care" benefit this summer (I hope it's still going through).

DS has been doing excellent reading. He is really catching on. He used to memorize books and pretend to read but he's picking up books he's never read before and reading them very well. I sometimes have to help him with a sound here or a letter combination sound since we've never gone over phonics (except for a little bit of starfall) but I'm quite pleased. His printing is getting a lot better too. He's getting more control and making his letters smaller. He can spell a lot of words too. He likes to take books and write out the titles.

I haven't been doing anything formal, just following his lead (even though I would love to do more). DD likes to follow his, the little mocking bird. It's so cute as she tries to do everything he does.

I bought a cupboad to put their stuff in. It makes it so much easier. It has 4 shelves and I have my craft stuff on the top, out of reach. I then have shoe boxes, each with different things in it. I have one for crayons/markers/coloured pencils, one just for glue and scissors, another for manipulatives, odd craft items, beads, a bigger box for painting stuff, ect... That way when we're done using something, it's easy to just throw it all in the right box and put it away when we're done. We also have tons of different kinds of paper, colouring books, work books and more, mostly things I've collected over the years but never had a place for. I was tired of things not being used so this works great. It's in the living room where they can get what they want. I also like that I can just close the door on the mess, lol!!

Guess what?! I'm getting my minivan back today! Peripherally, it might seem to have very little to do with homeschooling, but it actcually has quite a lot to do with it. I'm also feeling relatively energetic, for someone who's nine months pregnant... so the kids and I may actually do something for a change.

Yay on getting your van back!

Funny you mention a cabinet Carla, I was thinking of picking up a cheapy at Target today! I want a more organized place for "school" supplies as well. We already have an art cart in the kitchen where they can get coloring supplies, paints, stamps, etc when they want (though I recently moved the markers due to body painting recently LOL...they had to be superheroes complete with body markings!). Hey, our DS's are only 3 days apart, and our DD's only 2 months apart.

We have the Bob books but DS is pretty uninterested in them, so I got some others from Now I'm Reading and he likes those ones. It's nice to have some books where he can sound out all the words, yk? He's working on it. He wants to sound things out all the time but that includes words that just don't follow the simple rules, like "these" and "enough". And he wants to sound out punctuation, how do you explain that??

I waiver daily about "curriculums" for next year...do I start something like Shiller Math and FIAR? There is so much out there that says NOT to, but then there is DS who does seem to enjoy some structured stuff....

If he doesn't like it, you can always stop. It's easy to move to a less-structured setup if more structure doesn't work out for you.
