cleaning a wool rug?

Hello

I just inherited a wool woven area rug. The background is light tan or cream, can't tell for sure, it is sooooooo dirty. Overall dingy, with spots and staining. Otherwise it is beautiful. Does anyone know of a safe non-toxic, inexpesive way to get it clean without ruining or shrinking it?
Thank you for your input!

Sprinkle w/ baking soda, leave overnight then vacuum (gets smells out). Spray with vinegar (white distilled) and leave overnight (gets rid of mildew and is antibacterial). Then rent a commercial carpet shampooer (or one designed for home use, if you're lucky enough to own or have access to one), fill w/ warm (not hot) water and Dr Bronner's liquid soap and clean thoroughly. Might require two applications. This is what I did when we garbage-picked ours!

Warmly,
Michelle
