Veterinarians oppose cutting

Thought this an interesting post:

< Taking my little dog Baxter to the vet. for his check-up, I was standing next to the dr. while he conducted his examination. Out of the blue, with no warning I blurted out, "How come ya'll don't circumcise the male animals?" You could have cut the silence with a knife for what seemed hours, but he replied, "That would be considered a mutilation. There are certain breeds of dogs the owners insist on having the tails docked or ears cropped.......but we are trying to get them away from this as any type of healthy tissue removal is considered mutilation." I'd rather have this dr. operate me than any American M.D.

On another note, reading an article on pediatrician pain, read in part, "until recently, children were thought to feel pain in a lesser degree and have higher risk addiction than adults. Newer information indicates that not only do children experience severe pain and are no more at risk for addiction than for adults, BUT THEY ARE ALSO AT A GREATER RISK FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTURBANCES THAT HAVE IMMEDIATE AND LONG TERM DEVELOPMENT IMPACT.">

Baybee, your story reminds me of a woman on a debate board a couple of years ago. She was a veternarian and was on the fence about circumcising her soon to arrive son. However, she was leaning toward doing it. I asked her if I brought my dog in for a circumcision, if she would provide it? I explained that I wanted all of the benefits of circumcision for my dog and that I loved him so much that I thought he deserved the best health I could give him.

Those simple statements were not lost on her. She instantly fell off the fence with a crashing thump and at that instant became rabidly anti circumcision.

I just wish it was that easy for all.

Thank you for posting this, Baybee. What a thought-provoking post!

It's sad that we treat our animals better than we treat our children.

Yes. It makes me very angry that here in Scandinavia we have animal protection laws that forbid absolutely anykind of tail docking or ear cropping because it is concidered cruelty towards animals but we do not have laws saying no to genital cutting of babyboys. Though pretty much all doctors here refuse to do it but still.. makes me very angry.

Did you know there was a Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals established in this country before child abuse was considered illegal?

I don't remember all the details exactly, but basically back when it was still legal to beat your kids silly, not feed them, force them to sleep on rags on the floor, force them to work all day with backbreaking labor, there was a little girl who was extremely mistreated by her parents. The President of the SPCA found out and wondered why she wasn't offered the same protection by law as an animal, so then he started fighting to help kids.
