Uh oh

So, Samara has become quite the crankypants lately and I've discovered that she LOVES TV. How horrible is this? I'm totally not one of those, my-kids-never-watch-tv moms. I don't mind that they watch cartoons on Nick Jr or Noggin, or PBS Sprout. I was raised on TV and I turned out just fine. Better than fine actually, if I may toot my own horn. I was in the top 5% of my graduating class. Anywho...... Samara absolutely LOVES Maisy and Miffy. She smiles and coos at them. And I get some time to actually DO STUFF around the house without breaking my back trying to hold her at the same time. She does like being worn, but only for so long, kwim? It's not like I'm going to plop her in front of the tube from morning till night....but for a few minutes a day it's ok right?

I agree as well. Daphne cranes her head to see it too. HAHAHAHA Bad thing is it's usually at night when we are watching something like Real World or something equally trashy and mindless. LOL

Jevin watches way more TV than he should............

gosh... there are times I wish we had tv (cable)... if even to get things done for a few minutes.

We do own a tv. And Madeline and Katherine will watch a movie once a week (or less). But that's largely due to the fact that our tv is down in the basement and it's cold down here in the winter time! (yes, the computer is down in the basement as well, but I have the little space heater on when I"m down here... partially for me and mostly for Lucy! or that's what I tell dh!)

Well, I'm pretty against TV, mostly because of the commercials. But my husband has several fish tanks, so I've had an alternative that DS really likes. It works about the same way.

If you're not feeling bad about it, go ahead and use the TV. I totally understand trying to calm a crankypants! It's really a personal preference thing--the amount of time you're talking about using TV is nowhere near what might cause problems. If you are feeling upset or conflicted about it, maybe get one of those nature/IMAX DVDs. I'm sure your daughter would love to watch the camera swoop down on the mountains or ocean just as much as she enjoys the kids' programming, and it would be educational and calming. I've also heard about baby DVDs that are like a walk in Central Park from the baby's pov focusing in on things babies like to look at. I don't see much harm in that, either.

My DS enjoyed watching the Steelers at the Super Bowl (black and gold were easy for him to see then). I was very upset, as I am a big Browns fan. But he's got a few years yet to learn that they're evil.

Commercials

I am a victim. The other day I turned on the TV to have something to look at while I nursed, because I was so exhausted. We have TIVO, so I record Oprah. Anyway, a Don Ramones commercial came on, and even though I could zip right over it, I watched. There they were, sizzling steak fahitas and shrimp fahitas. I called up my husband, and told him to leave work right away. We raced over there, and as I drove, I made him swear not to laugh when I told him that I had seen a commercial. We are foodies, and never go to chain restaurants. Of course he did laugh, and the food was so horrible! The steak was so full of grissle that I couldn't eat it. He ordered lobster and it was breaded and deep fried. A bit shocking! Anyway, that shows how gullible I am! We only watch a few shows, like the Jim Lehrer News Hour, and Law & Order, and we TIVO them, but I still feel horrified if Ranjana happens to notice the TV. Sometimes I put a big pillow in the way so that she can't see it. She is attracted to the movement. The other day I finally let her watch because there was a guy doing a guitar solo, and I thought that it was o.k. for her to see it. She looked, but then got bored after a minute. I guess my fears were unfounded.
