Well, there, we might indeed see eye to eye! The possibilities are more varied in a public school but indoctrination is certainly possible, in fact it might be harder to get a handle on just *what* they were being indoctrinated in. I'm skeptical of many or even most types of schooling these days. My kid has been in several types of schools.

Children already are inclined to want the simplest answers to things, to know who is right and who is wrong, education is supposed to help children move away from this sort of thinking, not reinforce it.

This is why, if my child came home telling me we need to pray for a certain soldier, I'd be at the school asking *exactly* what they're telling the children. If they were doing it as part of supporting the war I'd be making HUGE waves. I'd also be modeling at home that it's not just 'our side' that needs prayer.

i would like the entire archdioses to come out against this war. i 'm not going to spit on any u.s. service man. but if they hadn't gone it would n't perpetuate.
and i have taken my daughter to peace rallies and i think that is fine.

Actually, the church has come out publically against the war. Before his death, John Paul II released a statement calling the war in Iraq, "Immoral and illegal." As an anti war Catholic, I was THRILLED by this statement. A year later when Bush attended the Pope's funeral and was praising him, I laughed and wondered how he felt about the statements made by the pope. John Paul also contacted both Bush and Saddam prior to our invasion in an attempt to prevent the war. Unfortunately, Bush didn't pay any attention, as he wanted to invade and was willing to lie to do it.

Our dds go to Catholic school and have prayed for the troops. I pray for them too. These poor men and women don't belong over there and they didn't ask for it. Many enlisted for the GI Bill for college or were in the National Reserves. They didn't enlist for Iraq. They want to protect our country. Bush LIED to us and our troops about a danger from Saddam that just didn't exist. I feel very bad for the people serving there. Several of the kids in my girls' school have fathers or older siblings serving in Iraq. I don't think there's anything wrong with them praying for the brother or father of a classmate. God forbid if one of my family were there, I'd want everyone praying for their safety too.

My second grade dd told me that her teacher told them that God listens to the prayers of children first. I think this is a sweet idea and probably true! They have also prayed for the people of Iraq in her class. I think prayer is central to Catholic and any other religious school and to be expected. As far as indoctrination, I'm MUCH more concerned about the #%^@ recruiters in the PUBLIC high school. They are there trying to recruit seniors to join the military. They were at my step dd's high school last year when she was a senior!
