Here is the note that came home with my kindergartener today!!!


Spirit Day
Friday, March 10, 2006
Friday, March 10th we will have our Kids With Character assembly for the month of February. Friday is also "Disney Day". All children are reminded to wear apparel with a Disney Theme.

That is just so wrong.

"Hannah, where is your Disney apparel? Don't you have any school spirit? Maybe we should call your mom to come and get you. Slacker."

Disney Day? How strange. Our spirit day involves wearing the school color not a Disney theme.

Holy cow. I think I'd send in a note saying that I'm appalled at the lack of consideration for parent's moral and lifestyle choices, as well as consideration for people who can't afford expensive clothing like that, and I'd be keeping my child home that day. It would be part protest, part preventing my child from seeing that orgy of consumerism, and part protecting her from being the "odd girl out" when she's not wearing such awful clothing.

Yuck. Our school's spirit day is also about wearing the school colors (which are black, gray and white, so it's easy! )

Well he chose to go, and to wear a sweater that I knitted for him. It has little dalmation puppies playing with a ball together on it. He said the kids will think it's disney, lol. I'm still really appalled though, and am writing a letter to the principal. Just last week they had turn off your TV day for Dr. Seuss' birthday!!!! They hosted an event for the kids to go to instead of watching TV, and all kids who went and signed the TV free for (a week maybe) card got a free homework pass worth one day without any homework. And now they are encouraging brain rot?

Usually school spirit day has something to do with showing how much you love your school, not how much money you can give Disney. What a crock! I am glad you are writing the principal.

As for Dr. Seuss' bday, I am not sure if you are pro or con, but I thought I would say that it is part of Read Across America, a special day each year to celebrate reading and books. It got hooked up with Dr. Seuss to make it more appealing to kids. And, then it got hooked with Turn off the TV somehow. It is pretty common for schools to celebrate this week doing reading activities and pledging to not watch tv and instead read. It is not a corporate event of any kind, just an event to promote reading.

I loved Dr. Suess day. I just don't get how they can tell the kids to turn off the TV one week, then promote disney the next.

That's ridiculous. I would send an email to the administration asking what's next? WalMart Day? Show your Chuck E Cheese Spirit?

I'm sorry---I just don't know what to say about that...

My dd's school had a full spirit week (not necessarily in the right order), but I rememver it as: Day 1 - crazy hair day
Day 2 - odd socks day
Day 3 - pj day
Day 4 - ribbon day (in which everyone was given a ribbon
to wear).
Day 5 - school color day. (green & white)

My dd's fav. was the odd socks day. She loves to wear mismatched socks.

Yah, that one is a bit of a stretch to understand. Did you ask the principal to explain it? I would love to know the answer.

The pricipal called me yesterday He said that he totally agrees with me, unfortunately it's not up to him really. He said that the spirit days etc. are all run by the PTO and when he voiced his opinion they shot him down. He could have vetoed it, but was trying to be diplomatic. He suggested I get a few other parents that agree with me and start going to PTO meetings.

It's all really bizarre to me. I don't remember school spirit being promoted until jr high or high school really.

Disney day just gives me the creeps, even though I like going to Disneyland and all that (have problems with going in Disney stores now though), but the thought of a school Disney day does make the skin crawl.

Moondiapers do you know what the assembly was about? It sounds like it could have been two different things going on. The assembly may have good meaning behind the name. Maybe the student body voted on disney day. I personally think its a little corny, but lots of kids are into that kinda stuff. Call your child's teacher and ask him/her to clarify the note that went home. Or, better yet get involved in the classroom or school PTA so you know exactly what's going on!

It sounds like your principal is really good. What a diplomatic response. Now go get all the crunchies to take over the PTO!
