Velour question.

I hope this makes since. I want to use this velour that I just got, problem is I don't know where to use it at. Can I use it next to baby's skin? Or does it stay wet? If I use it as the inner body will it wick? Or is it just mainly soaker fabric that isn't supposed to touch baby? But, if it's not supposed to touch baby, why is it so soft?

Can you tell I have no idea what the purpose for this fabric is?
Please help!

If is is at least 80% cotton you can use it anywhere. I love it for inner and outers. It is great against a baby's skin. It gets wet, but not near as wet as other cottons and it stays soft and comfortable. It is one of my favorite inners! You can use it as soakers but it will take quite a few layers. It basically works everywhere.

So would it work for an inner on an AIO? Or would it just wick moisture to the sides? Is it like fleece, next to the skin it pulls moisture away but still feels dry?

I have it in 2 of my AIO's and they work great. OF course my dd is niagra falls but still works great for her.

velour is not like microfleece -- it does not pull moisture away from you babe (provided you get at least 80% cotton) ... it functions just as any other cotton fabric does -- it absorbs. that said, i think velour, when wet, feels nicer than a lot of other fabrics do.

Velour works fine in AIOs, but it will wick sooner than microfleece or suedecloth would. DS is wearing a velour inner AIO right now. Just make the PUL roll in. And if you have a heavy wetter, you might need some DWR spray on the PUL. But I use this stuff on everything - definitely against baby's skin! Love it love it love it.

I also top my mama pads with velour, and while I can feel some wetness, it's really not that bad - it's not uncomfortable or anything. I am more comfortable in a velour topped pad than a "stay-dry" disposable!

Thanks mama's! You all answered my question. I am off to make some more diapers.

It actually can work better than microfleece in an AIO because microfleece is infamous for getting detergent build-up. So when your baby pee it rolls out the leg hole. I have never had a cotton inner get build-up so the pee will immediantly soak in. But like boscopup said, it can wick to your baby's clothes, so make sure your outer rolls in. Esp. if you put your baby in a onesie or cotton pants.

Just make sure you aren't using a cotton outer with a hidden inner layer of PUL because that will wick...and badly! Solid PUL with a velour inner works nicely though (I have several of those myself...err I mean Niamh does LOL!)

Ok, so no velour inner with cotton outter and hidden PUL? : That's what I was going to make. So, I can't do that with FOE. Ok, well maybe I will just use it in a soaker. Thanks.

You can bind it with FOE - just trim the cotton fabrics so they don't touch. I made the mistake of SERGING them together before binding, and that was just dumb.

Thanks! I'm just slightly queasy right now. I'm only 4 weeks, so the symptoms haven't hit full force yet, and probably won't for another couple weeks. So far, this one is going like last one - slight queasiness the week before my missed AF, but nothing that stops me from eating or anything yet.

Right... doesn't stop me sewing yet. Give me a few weeks and I might be too tired/quesy to sew for a bit. We'll see though! I've been sewing wipes today, and to make it on topic with this thread sort of, I'm using velour as one layer for all the wipes. LOL. So far, I've done flannel/velour and BKT/velour.
