how do you mark where the snaps go?

How do you mark where the snaps will go? I used one of those wash out pens on white suedecloth and it didn't wash out. In fact, the color smeared out from under the snaps and stained the first really great diaper I made! By each snap there is a purple stain. : So, what do you use? Or is there a special way you're supposed to wash when you use the "wash out" pens? I did a cold rinse first, then a hot wash.

I have a white water soluable pencil I use for dark fabrics. That works great

I have a little wing shaped piece of cardstock with holes punched out where the snap goes. I've found that is the easiest way to mark the wings...especially with side-snapping diapers with lots of snaps. I use a washable fabric marker...I've even used sharpees. I just put a little dot where the cap goes in and then the dot is under the cap.

CuriousLion, I've had mixed luck getting the purple pen marks off, I avoid them now. I have better luck with the blue pens. But usually I use pencil on light fabrics and a white colored pencil on dark fabrics, simply because pencils do not bleed and I can erase them. Even if I'm erasing the walls in my sewing room, thanks to my toddler! The markings are more precise too.

StrawHatBrat, IME some washable markers will wash out, and some will not. I think it depends on the fabric and the color.
