EC'ers~WE DID IT! - Page 3

Yep, that is where we bought ours!
I have a friend how has a girl and she does it the same as I do Sebastian.

We started using a Baby Bjorn with Tristan when he was about three weeks old. I would just hold him on it, supporting him under his thighs. It worked much better than a bowl, since I could rest part of his weight on the potty. I would just brace his back against my chest.
Hope that makes sense!

Lisa, here is Ahleemah's site:My journey to Elimination
I spent a lot of time perusing it last night b/c I was trying to figure out what I'd do for night time.

Total yesterday we caught 7 pees and 1 poop (by accident - I took him after he peed on the bed while I was reading and he 'blew' as soon as we got over the sink). Sure was nice to just rinse out the sink -v- cleaning a diaper and his bum stays so much the cleaner.

This morning he woke to eat at 4:00 and I figured I'd just wait for his pee before we went back to bed. HELLO . . . it is now 4:50 and he JUST PEED. I'm wide awake and so is he . . . need to figure out a better night-time system for certain.

Night time is almost impossible for us to do EC. Sometimes I think he's wiggling around because he has to go (after he says he doesn't want to nurse), so I take off his dipe and put him on the potty, only to pi$$ him off royally and have him wake up crying. I'm also so out of it when I wake up at night it's all I can do to nurse without both of us falling out of bed. So for us, daytime is enough for right now.

LOL EC'ing toys

reading about the EC'ing teddy bears makes me laugh...

My ds who is 15.5 months will insist that his dolly sit on it's little potty beside him while he sits on his. (the pic is at the bottom of the main page of my site)

he's taken to carrying the dolly in his sling and then taking it out to pee, back in sling, out to pee, etc... LOL he must be remembering how frequent that was a mere 6 months ago.....

Ahhhh memories,

Ahleemah - who can't believe that the last time a diaper touched her son's butt was over 5 months ago....

Just wanted to offer support, encouragement and *Congrats* for trying EC--you're going to be a pro at it at the rate you're going!

Thanks Karen.
Last night was tough since Kenny was dealing with some gassy-type cramping. Hard to read the grunts/kicking when they are constant. However, I wish I had a Baby Bjorn (ordered one last night), because I think it would have 'felt better' to him to sit on one. Every time I had him in the 'squat' position holding his thighs it was obvious he felt physically better. We did a lot of sink time last night.

This morning he was wet upon waking, but I'm thinking all the work last night made him tired. He slept 6 hours w/out waking to nurse.

He nursed and then he pooped and went back to bed.

It really is nice doing this - I'm already counting the diapers I haven't used! HA!

Heather, I came to CD'ing backwards - we were using sposies, but when I started EC'ing, I just started feeling so incredibly wasteful (all right, even *more* wasteful) throwing away a barely used sposie, but I couldn't stand to put it back on. Now I have a big ol' stash of CDs that stay pretty clean - they hardly ever get pooped in! And sometimes we can use the same CD for 6 hours or so without it getting peed in!

I took a dry diaper off of Eli today and he indicated his need to pee --- he had a tiny erection. My older son always got a "big pee pee" when he had to urinate. So I ran to the sink, and sure enough we caught the pee.

This would be easier if he wasn't so heavy. Am I complaining a lot on this thread? I feel like I am. If I can't EC with a good attitude maybe I should just forget it! I'll try to be More Positive.

Jane, you know when I think through your statement, it seems that you came to CD'ing in a very 'forward' manner. It is a back-up to not utilizing/wasting at all. I had never heard of EC'ing until I was looking for a way to keep my 2 year old dry at night. Somehow it came up in a search engine. She'd wet through her diaper, pull it off and later wet the bed and I'd find her at the bottom of the bed struggling to stay/feel dry.

Pamela, TOO COOL! Yep, my little guy ain't such a little guy. Order a Baby Bjorn . . . I have a feeling that $9.95 investment is going to make my life a heck of a lot easier. I'll just carry it from room to room. Maybe I should get another one???

Last night when we were 'working together' to get this thing down, Kenny was cramping and I swear if I had just put him on the Baby Bjorn he would have been so much happier. The Tupperware wasn't doing the trick - he didn't really 'relax' until I held him over the sink, but if he could 'sit' in that same position - I think he would actually sort of enjoy it.

I keep meaning to pick up a BB Little Potty myself--we've just been using the toilet or sink. So far Annalise hasn't been too excited about pottying in the early morning; I think she gets cranky about the walk to the bathroom when she really just wants to sleep. But I think the potty would help, cause it would make the whole process faster/easier.

I was counting "diapers saved" too, until I realized I was obsessing over it and it was changing my focus and messing with our communication. Our catch rate actually tended to be a bit worse on days I was actively counting (though I did have some great days too when counting). So I have to work on letting that anal, details-obsessed side of me go for this....

Ummm . . . er . . . we've missed more than we caught today, however, with that said . . . he's still dry. We are still changing, still smiling - and he is REALLY happy that mommy is so attentive.

I understand about the counting diapers . . . I stopped doing that too. Heck, I ought to start counting flannel blankets (My aunt and mother made a ton of these in different fabrics b/c I like to papoose my babies for a good while in blankets) . . . he goes diaperless now so he's peeing in the blankets left and right!
Actually I'm planning a naked baby/blanket day this week to help get us back on track. I too have tons of flannel blankets the relatives gave us; good thing they don't know what they're going to be used for

misses and catches

When we were first starting out EC, it was amazing how different two days in a row could be:

one day, almost perfect, barely a miss.
next day, OMG Pee everywhere and likely a poop on my lap... :-)

our wees ones have changes in their temperament as well, some days it's just not worth it to signal, some days they are occupied with some other mental task and just forget or choose not to. Which is where timing comes in handy...

TIC off the list in your head:
T- Timing
I- Intuition
C-Communication

That's the order it happened for us.. first I would do timing (ie: after a nap, after a feeding, etc) then I started to kick in to some very cool mama intuition (hearing the word "pee" in my head, and if ignored, getting a wet lap, LOL) and now at 15.5 months, he will often clearly communicate to me his need, sometimes now by pointing to the bathroom or walking there himself.

HTH,

Ahleemah

P.S> I'm a baby bjorn ADDICT!!!! I even specially found a SPlashproof potty which now is apparently not available in the US. We have two potties, one for bedroom and one for playspace.
My kid likes the baby bjorn too He also likes the padded potty insert on the big toilet (I hold him so he doesn't fall, but he actually sits). He seems to like support when he goes potty. Even when we're out in public and I'm holding him under the thighs, he still requires contact with the seat. He doesn't like to be held over things like has been described. When I hold him like that, I rest his butt on the seat and then he's happy. And mine is a big guy too, so it's easier on me

For night, we put him in diapers. I *try* not to rely on them but we still have at least one wet dipe a night. It's a really delicate balance for us. If I try to pee him too early he cries cuz I'm waking him. If I wait too long, then he wets his dipe. And I don't wake easily so I'm not really "all there" either, lol! But when I do manage to pee him at night, he then goes back to sleep more solidly, so it's nice

I can't remember which thread, but Heather asked which dipes people use? We use Liz's cloth at night. It's my fav, trim, snap dipe If we're out of those, I just use any fitted snap or velcro dipe I have lying around (tho I have more Liz hemp in the mail as we speak so I'll be a happy camper soon!). During the day when we go out we now use fitted dipes with no cover! For awhile we used prefolds and proraps, but we've had so very few misses when out, we go coverless now. I use Country cozy trainers. They pull up and down but are as absorbant as a thin dipe so good enuf for a miss w/o getting the pants wet. At home during the day he now wears Gerber training pants. If he has pants over those and we miss, they will get wet, but they do soak a bit, so it's not straight on the carpet at least. And he looks so adorable in underpants
post #56 of 99
Oh, and Heather, prefolds are great for carrying him around the house. I don't do it anymore cuz we've gotten pretty good, but I used to have one under him all the time in the beginning. When you pick up the baby, just put a prefold against your chest first. If he hadn't pooped in awhile, I would pull the end under his butt. We got a lot of wet prefolds that way the first month or so It's nice cuz you know instantly if he goes, but you don't have a huge amount of pee all over the place.

He has very 'active' poop today, so I've been doing prefolds w/ a snappi fastener (instead of just under him or against my chest to catch 'uncaught pee') b/c I can do that really quick. We've done better since after naps w/ the hit or miss!

I haven't been able to post our progress since Friday....when Heather inspired me to at least give this EC stuff a good try. First time I tried....I caught a big ole poop! Well, that was soooo rewarding. Missed a couple pee's.....then a few hours later, I caught a pee. Yahhooo!

Saturday, we were at church and at my SIL's house, so I wasn't as attentive as I should've been.

Today....I caught a pee and got pee'd on..lol. She just pooped in her diaper, cuz I was browing MDC and NOT paying attention to her. I have DH getting the Baby Bjorn potty today. Can't wait...cuz she's starting to protest being held by the thighs over the bathtub and my biceps start to ache after awhile holding her over our high sink.

Ahleemah...thanks for all the good info! I read your whole site and what a cute chubba bubba kiddo you have My inlaws were here this weekend and they're pretty used to all the "weird" stuff I do....so this was no biggie. FIL thinks it is pretty cool!

Heather....keep us posted.....I draw encouragement from all the poops & pees you catch! I'll post my progress here as well....

Just one thought.......ya know how it's said we only use between 3 and 7% of our brain?? I think EC and being "in tune" with your child is delving into another part of our brains.

Lisa,
Well, I ordered my Baby Bjorn potty today b/c there isn't a place around here that sells them. They aren't at our Baby's R Us - well, not the Little Potty.

I find that it is difficult to 'catch' everything when I have a list of other things to do. Since I don't think my 'communication' is intuitively all it can be right now, I still rely a bit on timing and watching his faces, listening to his grunts. But, when I'm getting laundry out of the dryer, making lunch for my kids, answering e-mails, etc. . . I'm just not 'used' to being as attentive as EC'ing requires. So, I AM LEARNING a whole new way to approach a lot of things I do (with my ears not only open, but HEARING . . . KWIM?).

I do know that I am SOOOO proud of dh. He's totally 'into' this and he has caught many poos and pees since his first experience outside of the shower. He'll go running at any ol' grunt and Kenny is nice enough to reward him.

I can feel Kenny pushing to poop with his belly - but sometimes he's not ready. I know when I feel that we had better try again relatively soon or I'll have a dirty diaper to clean.

I have learned a couple of things about my son:
1. There are no longer any confusing cries. If he is fed, not hurting and not tired . . . he either needs to 'go' or he has already 'gone' and wants me to clean it up.

2. He LOVES being clean . . . he even grins at me after he and I have communicated and he's been able to relieve himself in the sink. And if I try to draw him away from the sink too early . . . he'll cry at me as if to say, "Not yet mom!" Sometimes he'll go right when I put him back - other times he seems to be trying or just enjoying staring at us in the mirror.

3. He will NOT sit in a wet diaper/blanket and not let me know now. And that helps me keep him 100% clean.

So, although we don't have it perfect . . . hahahaha (I can't imagine there is any 'perfection' with EC'ing), I am not discouraged. I don't see going back. I love my SPeas even more now because without covers I can feel the wetness on the first pee! Prefolds still 'rock' and I'm no longer concerned over what diaper is the most absorbent . . . b/c . . . well, it doesn't need to be!

Oh, and Kenny doesn't pee at night unless he wakes . . . he really doesn't. He pees HEAVY and LONG first thing in the morning. It is like an old man. It goes pss - stop - psssss - stop - pssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! :LOL
post #60 of 99
Heather, I know what you mean! The most rewarding part of EC for us is knowing what Tristan wants. I'm able to interpret all his cries now: I need to go, I went, or I'm sleepy.
It's great
