My SIL made one for our first ds by taking apart his original carseat cover at the seams for a pattern. It took her about three hours once she had the cover apart.

Forgot to add: She used the original elastic strip to make it fit over the seat.

I hate to be a killjoy but please do not use these on your car seats. The covers that came with you seats have been tested to be safely used with the seat you have. And seat cover that you make will be beautiful but may compromise the safety of the seat.

Probably because they do not realize the liability that is involved OR they have a disclaimer on their pattern that they will not be held liable for any injury that occurs from using a cover made from thier pattern.

Really, do what you want but I am just trying to point out that this may not be a safe choice. Why not call the manufacturer of your car seat first and see if using a cover that you have made or puchased aftermarket will void the warranty?

OT, but I was told the same thing by my NICU nurse. When putting baby in the carseat I had that headrest thingy in there and she said that it voids the warranty because it is "after market".

Interesting info about the carseat safety with a different cover- you know, I would have never thought about that, but can see why it would void the warranty.

That said - man, I'm sucha fool for brocade I LOVE that carseat cover shown in the OP! lol I'll manage without it, I suppose - but it *is* pretty!

I thought this post was going to be about those covers that go over a carseat to keep a child warmer during cold weather. Do those also affect the safety of the carseat?

but by warranty - do they mean warranty that the seat will break or not work?? is there a warranty that baby will not be harmed anyway??

The cover that comes with the seat is tested to work with the seat to protect the child in case of an accident. Children are harmed in accidents, even when seats are used. By saying that using an aftermarket product voids the warranty it basically means that the company will not be held liable if your child is injured or worse if you are in an accident where the seat fails.

Ii found this site it was listed in Parents Magazine April06 issuehttp://www.lexierose.com/lexieproducts.htm

on that site it says
Quote:
Covers do not interfere with department of transportation safety regulations.
so i'm sure its fine to sew your own cover for the carseat.

esp when that site wants $89.00 for a cover you could make for less.

Carseat covers also have to be flame retardent, a homemade one would not be. While they might not 'technically' interfere w/ what the DOT says, every manufacturer forbids it.
