Are they pretty easy to make? Can you do it without having a serger?

I'm worried i'd somehow mess it up and it would come apart when it needs to be washed.

Thanks to anyone who replies

Super easy! A little time consuming... took about 6 hours from first cut to being on the crib. No serger needed. I would reccomend picking up a pattern (I just got a nursery bedding pattern from Jo-Ann's.) We have the crib as a side car, so I didn't have to make a full set.

I also made them for my DD 4 years ago. They have been washed probably 100 times, and they are still together.

I would agree - they are easy (just straight lines) and you don't have to serge it. I followed instructions in a sewing book I have, it wasn't a pattern, just steps and general guidelines. Mine has held up well for six years, three kids, a few washings; it tore a bit where the tie is (was) sewn in when I yanked it out of the crib thinking it was completely untied - my bad.

Are you aware that they don't recommend using them anymore?

Yes so true. Don't want to really scare anyone, but I was told by health nurse to take mine off, it reduces the chance of SIDS. Buy the way of with a bummper pad it reduces air circulation around the baby.
