39week 3day appt

I went for my 39week 3day appt today.

The dr is no longer talking about an induction. He said that my cervix is not favorable for it.

Now his plan is to do an NST, fasting sugar check and 2 hour sugar check on Monday and then an NST and sono on Wed with the understanding that we will be discussing a c-section.

He said that the baby is healthy and doing what she is supposed to be doing, but still may be too large to deliver. The sono on Wed is when he wants to look at the baby's size and consider the c/s.

He wanted to know what I thought....I cried in his office. I want a healthy baby, but I really don't want to be cut.

I just don't know what to think right now. I haven't told anyone. I haven't even talked to DH yet. I don't know what he is going to say.

s to you mama. i can understand not wanting to have a c-section, especially when it is because doctor thinks baby is too big. U/S is so not accurate at this stage of the game.

here is hoping that you go into labor on your own and no c-section.

Did he say why, specifically, the baby would be "too big to deliver"? Do you have any sort of physical problems? If not, I don't think there's any way to know how big a baby you're capable of delivering or how big a baby you are actually carrying until well into labor. Do some searches on MDC and read Henci Goer's the Thinking Woman's Guide to Birth if you can. You still have options. Fight for what you want, once you have all the facts and decide. Good luck to you.

Are there some specific medical concerns for you, besides just an estimate of size? Are you pre-e or something? You're not even term yet! If the baby is healthy, then what is the problem with waiting? U/s measurements can be off by 2 pounds. Even if the baby is "big", that doesn't mean you can't birth vaginally. There are so many things you can do to help yourself birth a large baby vaginally.

Don't forget you can refuse any procedure and you can get a second opinion. You can even change caregivers if this advice doesn't seem right to you.

I'm sorry you're being put through this. Good luck!

His medical reason is the GD.

DH is pretty calm about it. He would rather me have a section than end up having an induction that turns into a section. But DH has said that he doesn't want to do anything until after March 28th. That will be 41 weeks according to the dr's EDD.

Bullhocky!!!

Do NOT induce, do NOT get an epidural, do NOT get into any "lying" position..remain upright and your body can deliver the baby.
I am all of 5 feet tall, and have diabetes, and delivered a 9 pound baby with no problems.

Doctors SUCK!

I'm sorry the doctor is being difficult with you.

My advice is to at the VERY LEAST get a second opinion (preferably from the crunchiest doctor you can find ) it sounds like your GD is well controlled, so that really should not be an issue.

The reason your cervix isn't favorable for induction is because your body is NOT ready to birth this baby, by ANY method! My MIL who is 5'3" and all of 110lbs birthed THREE 9lb babies without so much as a complaint. As long as your GD is being managed well (and it sounds like it is) then your body WILL NOT grow a baby it cannot birth!

I agree with PPs... you should still be able to try to deliver the baby vaginally. I don't understand why your cervix isn't favorable for induction? I might be misunderstanding. Is he actually saying your cervix isn't favorable for *vaginal delivery*?

I think if I were in that position, I would say no to the c-section (unless the baby is in danger) and attempt to deliver the baby vaginally. If you're at a hospital with on-staff surgeons and anesthesiologists, they can very quickly take you from the delivery room to surgery for an immediate emergency c-section if necessary. In that case, your baby would benefit from having gone through at least some labor and you'd have had the opportunity to try to deliver it yourself (rather than wondering if you could). I would also turn down the induction because there's a good chance an induction will lead to many other interventions, including c-section.

I would think the odds are good you'll be able to deliver it yourself if the doc doesn't just look for excuses to do a c-section.

You're not even at your due date, so forget the induction. I think your Dh is on the right track...it's silly to think induction so early.

Your cervix isn't ready for induction, but that doesn't mean you won't go into labor naturally sometime soon. Let your body work.

In the meantime, I'd get serious about stuff... start doing all natural measures of encouraging labor (TONS of walking, sex, orgasms, perineal massage, whatever it takes), I'd talk to your doctor about membrane stripping (though closer to your due date, not now), and for peace of mind, I'd start calling around to find a different doctor. It's worth the effort!! Try to find someone that won't be so happy to do a c-section.

My doctor was "concerned" about my ability to birth a big baby....1) Noah wasn't as big as he thought and 2) Noah SHOT out of me. Not exactly a "getting stuck" scenario.

Last time I was pregnant, he was concerned about the twins' heads being too big for my pelvis .... he did a CT scan of my pelvis, and it measured just fine. Gave me the info I needed to say "see! I can do this! stop talking induction!" Just FYI...

What is your shoe size? Seriously though, I hear you can deliver a baby up to your shoe size +2. So for me with a 8.5 foot I could deliver a 10.5 pound baby. Its only an old midwives tale...but may be some comfort to you.

Thanks again ladies. I'm getting a second opinion from my old dr in Mississippi. He's the one who got me pregnant in the first place...when other dr's said it couldn't be done. Ok...DH is the baby's father, but the dr gave the the metformin and told me how to do it.

My shoe size is 9.5 so that would mean an 11.5 lb baby. Dang!

I keep thinking the sooner she comes, the sooner I am done with this dr and can move on. I have yet to find a crunchy dr down here. And midwives are nonexistant. I hate that about living in the south!

In all honesty your dr sounds way too c-section happy, I would be scared even if I did go into labour on my own that he will try and section anyway.

With Waneeke I kicked the intern out of the room because he brought up having to section me due to baby size. After I pushed her little(hahahaha) 10lb body out of me I knew he was just an idiot.

I never agree with having to have a section due to size especially if it is your first baby, because they just don't know.

Also, my cervix wasn't favourable for induction either last Monday and I've had 2 children, so it just means that the baby isn't ready yet.
