FIRES????

I love ours! I just got a new one with a removal crock pot. I highly rec. getting one that comes out.

QUESTIONS!!
WHAT ABOUT FIRES? Is this true? Now I am worried as we sleep with our on. Also, 2 days a week I work and am gone for 10 hours. Do you think this is too long to leave it on?? I haven't done it yet but was planning to.

We love doing steal cut oats and other porridge in our crock pot overnight.
Steal cut oats
I throw in a cup and 3-4 cups of water and put on low overnight.

I have some mixed porridge recipes too if anyone wants.

About.com has tons of vegetarian recipes

carminex-thanks for suggesting About.com. I printed out 23 recipes the other night! They also have LOADS of other great recipes.

I wasn't worried about the fire issue until reading some of these posts. I would imagine that if there was a huge threat of fire they wouldn't be able to be sold in such mass quantities. Also, just like anything else, I think we just follow the instructions and warnings and all will be well. I think, though, that with any appliance that you would leave on while not home or just for a long period there is always the thought of fire.

Thanks again.

JenP- I made your Pink Lentil Stew yesterday and I wanted to thank you for the recipe. I wanted to add that with my Crockpot, 5 hours on high was more like it and that really it took 7 hours before the potatoes and carrots were soft enough. We ended up heating up left overs for dinner and plan to try the stew tonight for dinner. The smell is phenomenal though! I expect it to make more regular appearances around my house.

I *always* use the crockpot over night, and I am never worried about a fire. I make sure that it's not touching any paper or plastic. It's quite a safe appliance and is designed to be left alone and do its stuff!

Also my crockpot is used only for veggie things: onion soup is great, chili, split pea soup, lentil stew

Note: I find if I leave food to cook more than 7 hours it starts to turn brown. But still tastes good.

Usually I "retire" the crockpot over the summer, as I find that it emits too much heat and I don't usually feel like a cooked hot food like this in the summer. That's when I switch over to gazpacho and fruit soups!

We used our crock pot to cook beans in the garage last summer.
