*so* disappointed with my card reader!

Okay, this was a really disappointing day. I have a Viking sewing/embroidery machine. I have never used the embroidery function--i know how to use it, but I really bought the machine as a sewing machine. I got an awesome deal on it (it was cheaper than the sewing-only machine I wanted) so i got it anyway. It also came with a card reader/writer.

Well, now I decided I want to start embroidering (I'm making diapers). My card reader isn't being identified by my computer. No matter what I do, it won't recognize the reader. I can't find drivers for it *anywhere* because it isn't Viking's most "current" model. I have cute designs downloaded that I can't use!

Grr...I have the choice of $150 for a new card reader from the Viking store near me (which probably doesn't come with software--I haven't asked yet) or $160 for an Ultimate card reader. Plus another $80 or so for software.

So after all this time, I decide to use my embroidery stuff...and I can't use it.

Hi, when I installed mine, the instruction booklet said to first install your software, leave that software CD in the drive and THEN plug in the cable to the computer (after connecting first to the reader/writer.) Then you get the Found New Hardware wizard to install the reader/writer. When you install your software, you select your machine type and select USB for reader/writer type.

In the booklet it says...Note: The driver is found in the root folder of your software CD. Browse through the drives and folders until you find the one for your CD. Select the file called RWSE.inf and follow the on-screen instructions.

I am assuming you have a viking reader/writer with a USB plug? Hope this helps you out!

Thanks...I have the Viking reader/writer, but it's not the USB, it's the old parallel port kind. I'm going to see if I upgrade my software if that will help. I think my software is so old that the drivers aren't being read by Windows XP.

Sigh...why does this have to be so darn expensive???

My booklet also says (referring to a reader/writer with parallel port), ensure the reader/write is plugged in with the silver switch on the reader/writer to the right (towards the card slot).

There are updates to the reader/writer and other software on the Viking Husqvarna website. I would try all these things before doing anything else. Even try to talk to your Viking dealer and see if they have suggestions! How old is your software? Mine is Customizing Plus (2001) and it is running with XP.

my software is from 1996

I got it for free when I bought my card reader/writer (I got it used), so I can't complain too hard...I really need to upgrade the software before I do anything else.

Ahh, well you "deserve" to get new software then! But that reader/writer should still work for you.
