UPDATE: Paragard IUD slipped

Thread Starter
I was checking for the threads after my period (forgot last month) and noticed the plastic part of the IUD was hanging out. It doesn't hurt or anything, but I had to call to get it redone. At first, they said it would take a month, then I got in on Wed. Dh had mentioned he could feel it (just a day or so ago) and I said he'd feel something like fishing line. He said it was more like a rope-turns out it was plastic.

Anyone who had one slip/fall out and had additional ones stay put? It's the paragard, if that makes a difference.

thanks.

Update 4/12- it slipped again, full post at the end.

Also, since I just had a period, it's not likely that I'm pg, right?

Anyone?

During all the years that I had a paragard DH could feel the string (like fishing line but thicker) and I could as well if I reached up there. It's there so it can be removed easily. Is that what you are feeling? If so thats completely normal. Just dont tug on it or you will pull your IUD out.

Nope, it's not the string. I know I should feel the string, but I feel the end of the IUD. The string is like a thick fishing line, but this is actual plastic.

I've got an appointment tomorrow to check it out and either tell me I'm nuts or have it replaced.

oops, double post.

you may not want to get it replaced.

Some women's bodys expel the IUD, if yours is expelled you can get pg- you have no protection.

I personally think I would fear that it would happen again.

I know women who expelled hers and never felt it or saw it so next time you might not be so lucky as to feel it.

For anyone interested in the update, it had slipped. I did decide to get a new one, and I will check the strings on a regular basis (a few times a week) for a few months, then once a month after. If the same thing happens again, I'll have to look for something else.

Cool. Glad you didn't get pregnant during the "slipped" time.

I had an iud become expelled, it fell in the toilet. The next one I had put it did the same

now I'm on my third, although many years and three kiddos later. I am nursing and not getting my period, and I check the strings all the time (a couple times a week) I don't feel like I could be fertile right now (past experience) but I have a feeling this iud will likely be expelled as well when I get my period.... so not sure how much good its going to do me.

I was wondering on the likelihood of it being expelled again, once it's been expelled once. The nurse practioner who put it in said she'd never seen something like i had (where it was only partially out) in 8+ years of doing them.

did you have af at the time? mine always came out during my first af after having them put in...

I guess that totally defeats the purpose of birthcontrol, but I was always aware when they came out.. I think if your body expells it the you are more likely to have it happen again

I had 4 af total while it was is in. I think it was in the first 2 (for sure the first 1) and think it was out for the 2nd 2. For sure out for the 4th.

My mirena fell out after 13 days. Everyone was shocked. I didn't get another.

Have you checked with the dr on that? I know you are supposed to check the strings once a month to make sure it is still there. How are the drs going to remove it if the strings aren't protruding?

Dh said yesterday that he felt something. I checked this morning and same thing happened!! It slipped again. So, now I have to get in to have it removed and try something different- AGAIN. I'd try NFP, but I'm not sleeping regularly enough at night. BCP kill the sex drive. Got pg w/OTC stuff. Dh won't get the V in case we decide we want another baby, even though we're both 99.9999% sure we are done.

Sorry, it didn't work out for you. Cervical cap or diaphragm maybe?

I thought about the diaphram, but from what I found, the effective rate isn't too high. I'd also be worried about not getting it right.

I wonder if whatever is causing the IUD to not stay put would be related to my kids being born 5 weeks early- maybe I've got some crazy sort of uterus.

well for all my promoting the iud as a great contraceptive even with its problems, my iud which has been in place for 10 months has "disapeared"

I used to check the strings once a week and I checked yesterday and they are gone! and no I don't think it fell out. I am so stressed about going to the dr and finding out where it is that I am avoiding it, I'll never get one again, which probably means baby #5 sooner than later...... and then the snip snip
