What are your kids’ ages and pseudonyms?
Emily is 8.
Abigail will be 6 in two weeks.
Gracie is 3.5.
Matthew will be 6mo in two weeks.

How long have you been home schooling? Is there a story behind it?
This is our third year. No real story, it was always in my heart to do and I did it. Dh did take some convincing tho.

Does your home school have a name or a mission statement?
No and no. I'd like a school name tho.

What is your general home schooling philosophy?
We are homeschoolers even when pregnant. It's not something you just start doing one day. Our children are ALWAYS learning from us, even in utero. Other than that and I don't know if it's more a method than philosophy, we use Classical Education.

Do you use a curriculum?
Yep. How to Study Your Bible for Kids ( http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=03623&event=1025SBF|10547|1025 ), Rod & Staff (math, english, phonics, reading), Handwriting Without Tears, Story of the World, make my own science stuff, and Purposeful Design Spelling (just got it today..never used it before).

Do you or your children have any special interests or hobbies that influence your home schooling?
Not really. *shrug* We kind of incorporate things as we go along. Like Saturday I taught them how to crochet. Then if they have an interest they can pursue it.

What is your typical daily routine? weekly routine?
Our day looks like this. It doesn't really change day to day. I thrive better (meaning...I don't get stressed out) if we stick as best as we can to a routine.
7:15-7:30 ~ get up and around to take dh to work
8:30 ~ We're home and I make breakfast.
9:00-11:30 ~ I do housework, girls help if there is stuff for them to do (folding laundry, tidying rooms, etc). They have playtime.
12:00 ~ Lunch
12:30 or 1:00 ~ Start school.
3:00 or 3:30 ~ School's done.
4:00-4:45 ~ They play, I have some "Me" time, I prepare as much dinner as I can before we leave to pick up dh.

The only exception to our morning stuff is Monday's, grocery day.

Do you have any special methods/tips for planning? household organization? storage? record keeping?
We aren't required to do record keeping.

I have all our school stuff in Emily/Matthew's bedroom. There is two small
bookshelves, a tall bookshelf and a plastic 7-drawer thing. On the smaller
shelves I have chapter books, curriculum and junk (lol). In the plastic thing I
keep office supplies, learning games, extra workbooks (things I pull ideas from,
not everyday curriculum), and....junk. LOL!! Can you tell I need to get in
there and clean???

We usually do school in the living room and dining room. This year I finally
found a system that works and keeps stuff organized for us. I bought a pink tub
for each of the girls (You can see a pic here. Yes, that is our cat in one of
them..lol http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...oolmascot3.jpg).
In there we keep:
*a zippered pencil case
*a large plastic crayon box for crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissors,
glue
*school books they use everyday
*spiral notebooks

On Sunday nights I grab the boxes and go thru to prepare lessons for the week.
That way each day all they have to do is get their box, grab their lessons and
do it. It has saved me SO much time! I'm not gathering up books every day
or going thru trying to find pencils...everything is right there and ready to
go!

Tell us what you did today!
Today was grocery day. We dropped dh off at work and got our shopping done. We got a late start so my routine was totally off. It worked out tho b/c he had to stay late to teach a class, so everything just happened 30 minutes later tonight. Anyway....when we got home I let the girls play a bit then I made lunch. After lunch Gracie laid down for a quiet time (sometimes she stays up but she's been sick so I made her have a quiet time today). We started with Bible Study, then History. Those are the two things we do together. Then I turn them loose w/ their baskets. They both did Spelling first since they were excited about their new books. That was until Em realized she had more words. It went something like this:

I asked her how it's going....
"Um, oooook."
"Are you regretting asking me for new spelling book?"
"Yeeeeeeeeah. There are SO MANY words!!!!"

She wanted something different for Spelling, a workbook like we used to do. So I agreed and we found one today (see above). The way we were doing it, I combined spelling w/ other things. I picked out a sentence or two from a chapter book (i.e. Little Women). I'd write it in her Spelling notebook and highlight vocab/spelling words, usually about 6 words (not much but they were pretty challenging). She'd do different things like look up definitions, put in ABC order, use in a sentence, etc. So now that she has this book with like 15 list words, she's regretting asking for it.

I helped Abby with her Math a little bit. Usually she's fine on her own but she's learning to count by 25's and it's not clicking yet. Then I showed Em how to do a bit of long division (72 divided by 6). After that Abby did her Phonics and I went thru that with her. Oh..Abby also did some copywork (handwriting) at one point too. By then Em was ready for English and I went over that with her.

They put their baskets away, got a snack and played with Sweet Streets.

I like your spelling idea about taking words from a book and having your dd do different things with them.

Gonna try posting in between the girls working independantly and me helping them with stuff.....

Today is a pretty normal day around here. This morning after dropping off dh, having breakfast and a little play time, the girls helped clean house. They helped tidy up the living room then worked on their bedrooms. I worked on my room some until I needed to help reorganize the toy box. I feel SO much more relaxed now that things are put away and tidy!

Right now Abby is doing handwriting/copywork and Em is working on Spelling. Abby's already done her Spelling and Em was really bummed that Abby's assignment took about 10 seconds.

(Had to go help the girls...they are right behind me at the dining room table)

They've moved on to Phonics and Math. Em was going to do her English but switched to Math because I can't help both at once. Abby needs me to walk her thru Phonics still.

Tomorrow should be a normal day as well (at least I hope!). They are excited b/c on Thursday we have a field trip to a goat farm. Should be fun!

Well..that's about it for now. Em's ready for me to help her w/ her long division.

Thanks I took that idea from someone at the WTM message boards. It worked really great for dd but I think she was getting bored with it. She also likes to do workbook-type stuff so that may be why she was getting bored and wanted to switch.

Well....we had a really fun field trip on Thursday and it got cancelled. The HS group was going to a goat farm. However the weather has gotten colder and they can't have the baby goats out in the cold. I'm trying to think of another field trip we can do on our own b/c the girls were super excited this farm one. Maybe a trip to the dairy farm?? Not much of a tour there but I could go for some yummy cheese curds. Dunno...

That is a bummer about the field trip! The goat farm sounds like a lot of fun. The dairy farm would be neat too, I am all about yummy food and field trips! Let us know what you do, please?

Hey Aurora (And anyone else who is reading this but not posting )

The dairy farm is more like just a store where you can buy their products. They do tours but you have to have like 25+ people. Still thinking about it...maybe Friday b/c I think the weather is going to be bad tomorrow.

Sometimes Friday is our "fun day". We do the library and any errands that have come up. I try my best not to run errands Tues-Thurs so we keep to our routine. I do have some errands to run Friday so I'm trying to plan my day and figure out if I can squeeze in a drive to the dairy.

I'm dragging today. The girls have been playing well this morning which was nice b/c I caught a little nap while Matthew napped. I don't know why (maybe not taking my vits yesterday) but I do feel better now.

The girls have clothes to fold today. They know it's sitting there and it's their responsibility but are playing instead. So they'll be THRILLED when they find out it will be done after school.

Your kids are spaces just like mine! Mine are 9, 7, 4, and 18 months. Keep you busy, eh?

So you said that your husband took some convincing. Care to elaborate on that?

And how did you come to your homeschooling philosophy?

Abby's doing Phonics. Em's doing Math. Gracie is making her birthday party invitations ( Her birthday is in OCTOBER).

fourlittlebirds ~ Oh yes, very busy!!

Convincing my dh:
I think I originally brought up the idea. He was very skeptical of it but agreed to try it. I did a few things with her but I rushed her so much. I really regret that. Part of it was me having to deschool/college myself. I was trying to "do school" WAY too early and make it work so he would approve. I didn't want to fail. Mind you, this was when our oldest dd was like 3-4yrs old. It took me a while to just relax and let her lead the learning. However, to dh it appeared we weren't "doing school".

At some point when she was 4 (she might have been close to 5), he started mentioning public school. That we really needed to be doing something or she'd need to be put in PS.

So I kicked it into high gear and started doing more with her. Not much...Math, Handwriting, and Phonics. Then we did stuff like studying butterflies, gardening, etc.

Once he SAW her learning (well, learning according to HIM....we all know she was learning the entire time) he was convinced. He's never brought up PS again.

My Philosophy:
I get really sad when I see people putting their kids in school because they think they can't teach them at home. They think that they can't be a teacher. I'm thinking...HELLO!!! You've been their teacher up until now, why do things have to change?? YOU know your child best why turn them over to someone who they are a complete stranger to? (disclaimer: I will say I don't think HS'ing is for everyone. It's just the general attitude that parents can't be their child's teacher..kwim?)

Even in the womb babies learn the sound of their mother's voice, they learn the voices of family members, they can recognize songs that Mama plays for them, etc. And obivously after birth we are constantly teaching them things. So in essence, everyone is a Homeschooler.

For those of us who continue with HS'ing, there is never a real starting point. We all have different philosophies/methods for formal schooling...some of us unschool and some of us start our kids with a curriculum.

School's over for today.

This morning we had snow so the girls played outside for a while. They built a snowman family. Glad I took pictures becuase it's all melted now!

School time went well. They did their Spelling pretests. Abby got all of them right. Em missed two. So tomorrow I'll just have her do those two for a "test".

When they got done with their bookwork we did a history project. We did egg yolk painting on sugar cookies. There is a painting method used (and was used during Byzantine times) using egg yolk so that the pigment will bind and colors will be bright. We used the cross template from the SOTW2 AG and made cross cookies. The girls painted them and the cookies went in the oven. They came out really pretty!!

I'm hoping to have a substitute field trip tomorrow. There are some wild horses in the area (can't remember why they are here...need to ask the ILs again) so I want to take them over to see those. Then we might head over to the dairy farm. OH...and we have to stop at the library too. Not sure if everything is going to work out. I'm hoping it will!

Thanks

Our field trip is all planned! After lunch we'll take care of the library stuff and a couple other errands. Then we're heading over to my ILs. MIL is going to go with us. They know where the wild horses are so she can get me there. Then we'll go out to the dairy. I think we'll have time to do it all.

Since our afternoon is crazy we'll take it easy this morning and put off school work until Monday. Gotta love year round schooling......it's so nice taking breaks whenever we need them!

Hey! I just came across this thread! Did you ever see any wild horses? You know, I grew up part of the time on a farm and we had a few race horses. I still feel drawn to them (and to animals in general, actually.) I need to make friends with someone nearby who has horses so we can go over and visit them (and the people too!)

There's a place in Broken Arrow called Labzara where groups can go for a safety around horses lesson and even ride a little. I've never been, but I'd like to go sometime. I've thought about us volunteering to groom the horses, clean stalls even, etc... so that we can get to spend time around horses. They also offer lessons.

What are some other fun field trips you guys have taken?

Hey Danielle

Yeah, we did go by and see them. It was right on our way from the ILs house to the Dairy.

That place in BA sounds so fun!!! That would be a great field trip! Abigail is really into horses right now.

Let's see...
*Blue Bell Ice Cream factory (I think you have to pay for tours now tho)
*Mazzio's Pizza (just a tour of a restaurant)
*Krispy Kreme
*Some wildlife rescue place up near Claremore or Collinsville
*Blackberry picking
*Dh and I took the girls to Pea Ridge (AR) on our way home from Branson last year
*Police Station
*Fire Station
*Horse stables (can't remember the name but they are closed now)
*Peach orchard (UGH...the name is on the tip of my tongue). They also have apples and pumpkins.
